Hello, I'm new to this forum and I would like to have some help switching key functions when using the FN button on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C855). For example, to change my brightness, I simply just press F2 or F3, but to use F2 and F3, I have to hold FN. And when I try to close tabs on a browser, I would have to hold FN, press Ctrl or Alt and press F4. I'm a gamer and reaching down to FN and to press one of the F's while focusing is harder than tapping the key. If anyone can help me, I would appreciate very much! :)

Check your Bios Settings, there should be an option for the FN (Function) Key, just change it to the opposite.

You mean the Bios menu? I don't see anything related to the keyboard because it's more simpler than Windows 7 or lower

Edit: Never mind, my Toshiba system settings had a keyboard tab that allows you switch between FN keys. :D

Glad you got it resolved, and so happy you posted what fixed it for you, my HP had the setting in the BIOS.

On my computer, in the Bios I found it under "Control Key" <Enable> or <Disable>, by default it was enabled, I disabled it and to use the F1-F12 keys I no longer have to use Fn, I now have to use Fn to use the volume, display, etc...settings on those keys.

I am having the same problem on my Toshiba, but I am not enlightened enough to find what you found. If you could please tell me how to change my FN keys you may become my new best friend!

The Toshiba System Settings in Windows is just labeled simply System Settings. If you tap your windows key and type in System Settings, the program will appear. Inside the Toshiba System Settings program there is a Keyboard category where you can change the Fn controls.

Yeah, I just found that yesterday myself. There's a SystemSettings.exe program in Program Files (x86) Toshiba folder. I ran that out of desperation. If they are going to default to having to press the FN key to get function key presses then they should at least have a shortcut or tile labelled "Reverse FN Key Behavior" or something. A lot of people on Toshiba Forums are ripping their hair out. :)

This was driving me mad too!
My solution:-
Open task manager
Start-up tab
“TOSHIBA Function Key Main Module”
Right click and Disable
Reboot.
Test not by immediate ALT F4 but open eg Windows Explorer and then try ALT F4
Good luck!!
Don't know how to switch back easily. Of course you can repeat the process and reboot.
As my touch screen is completely gone now, I really need ALT F4 to shut apps down.
