searchbox in start

After I upgraded from w7 to w8 my dvd drive is no longer recognized.
I believe I found a fix,but I have to get in command mode as an administrator.
When I attempt to type cmd in box , I just type the first letter and start screen
refreshs and I am stuck.
looking for help
