Solved How can I organize the sequence of tiles in a Group?

I was expecting the Start screen to function like the Taskbar in the sense that I can drop my tiles exactly where I want them to appear (sequence-wise).

Well, it sometimes does, it but I noticed that moving a tile causes a whole bunch of others to also move, whereas I just want to insert Tile X between Tile A and Tile B. But many more tiles are getting moved around and the next result is that my sequence is messed up and I can't get it.

What's the deal? Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to force to it to accept my sequence and, say, just move the other tiles over?

By the way, the tiles in question are the "legacy" Windows apps tiles, not Windows 8 app tiles.

Thanks!

bring the charm bar up on the right hand side of the screen, click settings, click help, type the word "tiles", it explains how to rearrange tiles.

Yes - it's also worth remembering that tiles flow top-to-bottom, and in two tile segments (either one large tile or two smaller tiles side-by-side). Tiles will move up or down (not left to right) depending on where you place them.

Ok, thanks, both responses were helpful--especially about the top-to-bottom flow.

I'm still finding a bit tricky and not as intuitive as I thought it would be, but I haven't given up. I'll keep at it and I hopefully get the hang of it.

Thanks.

No, I'm finding it messy.

So I was just able to arrange column 1 with my tiles, now that I understood about top-to-bottom.

Now I want to reorder the tiles in column 2. All I want to do is switch the locations of tile in R1,C2 with the tile in R2,C2. I want to all the tiles in C1 alone.

But as soon as I drag the R1,C2 tile down, this is what it begins to do:
  • Moves tile in R2,C1 to R1,C2
  • Moves tile in R2,C2 to R2,C1

Arggghh! That's not what I want! I just want to move R2,C2 up one ROW to R1,C2 and bring that one down from R1,C2 to R2,C2.

I really hope it is me because it shouldn't be this confusing.

Ok, I now see and understand what you meant by "two tile segments".

It's getting better as far as me getting what I want when I move tiles around, but I'm still not sold yet on ease-of-use. Could be just learning curve, but I'll keep at it to see.

Thanks!

It's a learning curve - you'll get it eventually and be able to tell what's going to happen. It just takes time - keep at it and it'll become second nature in no time ;).
