Iphone 5 - Stick to Samsung or new Nokia Windows 8 phone

Hi there
for once Apple seems to be following rather than leading the pack.

From "Street Whisper" the new Iphone 5 to be unveiled this week doesn't really offer anything that isn't out there already - and forcing people to do everything via iTunes doesn't help either.

I'm still glad I got the Samsung Galaxy III-s.

The new Windows 8 phone by Nokia could be a winner too -- much as I have reservations about some aspects of W8 as a desktop / workstation OS it certainly is just right (or even ideal) on a mobile device - and the chance of running some proper Windows applications on a phone is certainly a benefit too.

Apple's time IMO has been and gone -- It might be cash richer than US federal gov at the moment -- but this huge pile of cash will gradually wane away.

After all what do they make now that people really want in droves. - Nobody needs iPods any more -- music easily handled on smart phones, their macbooks while nice are wallet bustingly expensive, and the aging iPhone looks decidedly Dinosaur like in comparison with the likes of Samsung, HTC etc.

Cheers
jimbo

Jimbo, I believe that Henry Ford had a theory: "you can have your Model A any color you want as long as it is black."

I personally like my iPhone and how easy it is to sync with my outlook and my eWallet secure files. I like podcasts and iTunes does a good job of sync'ing. It is a no-brainer for me but phones are a personal thing for many people and as long as you like what you have, no problem.

I guess that's why apple are suing the pants off everyone they can, they don't want to loose out on being in the top spot so instead of innovating they are trying to crush and stamp out any opposition.

Well, I have seen that people are ditching their prior gen iPhones to get in line for the new upcoming iPhone...so they must still be doing something right.

. - Nobody needs iPods any more -- music easily handled on smart phones,
Many certainly do use the phones for that. iPods do offer better battery life, and they are cheaper for parents not ready yet to splurge on a phone with a contract for their children.

their macbooks while nice are wallet bustingly expensive,
Yeah, they are expensive. I have a need for an outside project to use some Mac's and I am in the process of shopping for a used MacBook to learn about the OS.

and the aging iPhone looks decidedly Dinosaur like in comparison with the likes of Samsung, HTC etc.
Yeah, but the iPhone works well, and has a 1 size fits most mentality, thus application support is a bit better and consistent in the Apple marketplace. Far too many apps which either don't work on Droid Model 1 or Droid Model 2, or Tablets A, B, C, but not Tablets D, E and F. It's much nicer not having these issues when dealing with the iPhones. < Not that I am an iPhone owner or user, but understand why people are drawn to the devices.

I don't think that Apple dominance in many of these areas is really going away anytime soon.

The iPhone is reaching a point of maturity. Personally I don't think it's as much about innovation at this point as it is about reliability and consistency of operation.

Every time I turn around, someone around me (one of the kids, a friend) who have the Android phones complain that their phone died, or something doesn't work right or they aren't getting text messages we send them. On the other hand I never hear this from anyone I know that has an iPhone.

Apple is being smart, IMHO. They're stabilizing their platform. They've already made their market penetration. Now they're just going to continue to improve it incrementally without breaking anything. (Relatively speaking).

That's how I see it right now, anyway.

The iphone is maturing, but I feel like it will become the mac. Too expensive? But it works. Yadadada. I see apple in the future just keeping the user experience consistent and lessen down the dramatic innovation to cater to their user base. Just like their macs.

I personally poo on android, as it is just no. No wonder the logo of android is a short green robot, it's obese, has diabetes, and just sickly overall. Android ranks third in user satisfaction and is beat out by Windows Phone and iphone. The iphone doesn't have anything better or comparable to a high end android device or even mid-range for that matter. That is where Windows Phone 8 will win. People with shoddy phones coming out of contracts or nearing upgrades might just end with a Windows Phone because hardware is better and software is supreme. I for one, might do something ludicrous and buy a new Lumia 920 out of contract if it speaks to me (as in the camera is drop dead stunning and seems durable, but as it's Nokia this is no concern). Not only that, a familiar brand will become a familiar ecosystem of apps and user experience between different form factors working as one.

apple's time might be ending. Recently, a few economists are feeling that too. Too much hype will bring them down.

I should also add, since a Windows Phone 8 is like a Pocket PC, can one call it a Baby PC? :)

I'll let you know the first time I run into someone using a Windows Phone. Microsoft has an uphill battle on its hands. Even when I go into a mobile phone store (like Best Buy Mobile) I have to hunt to find the Windows phones.

Please, you are killing me!. People don't care about the hardware. They care about the trendiness. If it's not what everybody else is using, they don't want it.

I don't think so, not in the next 2-3 years at least. Too much hype you say...that sounds like it's true for the handful of people who think MS is really taking off. (yes, CokeRobot, I include you in that list).

Have you met anyone with an android that ACTUALLY loves their phone? iphone users do, my friends with Windows Phones do, but for everyone else I know that has android hate them. I only know about three people out of 100 or so people I know closely that love their phone; and the thing that they love are widgets. I've literally seen a brand new droid be thrown at a trash can, a new android phone thrown on the floor as it was being silly, and numerous other things. Speaking of trendy over cost, that would be true only if android wasn't about four times more used than the iphone. Why? Better hardware and lower cost effective phones.

And I do hype about Microsoft because I see that they have nowhere to go but up. They're exciting again, they have new products, products of which that stem huge debates and lengthy conversations. People are talking about them again like they used to.

I just read a really good analogy about the iphone. Six years ago, it was the sleek and sexy BMW that they unveiled unto the world. Today, it's a slightly refreshed Toyota Camry, it's safe, reliable and you mom drives one.

The main reason people stick with iPhone is because they've invested so much into the ecosystem between Apps and Music purchases that making a move is not worthwhile. Plus all the accessories that they've bought that are Apple specific with built in dockers etc. I used to have an iPhone 3GS and it was alright except having to reboot once every couple of weeks or less. That was until iOS 4 came out and the performance dropped, reboots occurred more often and the poor design of multitasking caused everything to stop working. I had little invested as far as Apps, no music because I hated iTunes and only one radio that had an Apple docker. I dumped it for an HTC HD7 Windows Phone that put the 3GS to shame. I'll be replacing it with the Nokia 920 in a couple of months.

The Nokia 920 camera and screen appear to outclass everything out there, but all I've seen are videos. Gonna take a serious look when it comes out and I very well might switch from Android. Big fan of customization, and with all the pluses of the iPhone I could never get one. That lack of screen freedom might be the only drawback of the 920 for me, I don't know. Will have to wait a couple months to find out what you can and can't do with it.

Thus far I have seen exactly one (1) person in my life with a Windows phone, so they do exist.

Yes, I support our corporate cell phones at work and we are predominately android and most people are satisfied with their phones. We have quite a number of Motorola Droid 1's, 2's, Samsung Charges, and the popular Motorola Razr and Razr Maxx. The only complaints we have at work are the people who were stuck on Blackberry and wanted to get to a new Droid phone. I personally have the Motorola Droid 2 and it's been solid for me.

Speaking of trendy over cost, that would be true only if android wasn't about four times more used than the iphone. Why? Better hardware and lower cost effective phones.
Are you saying that Droid has 75% of the SmartPhone market and Apple has the remaining 25%. I don't think Droids are 4 to 1 over iPhones. If so, then clearly people must not hate them as much as you seem to believe.

And I do hype about Microsoft because I see that they have nowhere to go but up. They're exciting again, they have new products, products of which that stem huge debates and lengthy conversations. People are talking about them again like they used to.
Well, they absolutely are getting a lot of talk. But to be fair, so is the iPhone 5 even though it's bringing very little to the table as far as new.

Every time I turn around, someone around me (one of the kids, a friend) who have the Android phones complain that their phone died, or something doesn't work right or they aren't getting text messages we send them. On the other hand I never hear this from anyone I know that has an iPhone.

I have to disagree with your statement as I regularly hear from friends and see posts on facebook from people about how the love of their life the iPhone has gone and died on them, or that they cant make calls, or text messages have gone astray, or that they have lost everything from their iPhone.

Have you met anyone with an android that ACTUALLY loves their phone? iphone users do, my friends with Windows Phones do, but for everyone else I know that has android hate them.

Ahh, so these droids must have at least android 3 or more likely 4 installed? That's probably the only version that is acceptable, as the phone itself is a higher end model. Many that I know have mid range phones that are drab, but were cost effective at the time.
And no, I'm talking about android in general, not just the droid.
