Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday reported sliding sales and profits in its most recent quarter as consumers continued to flock to tablet computers in a mobile revolution led by Apple.

The computer behemoth delivered an $8.9 billion loss in its fiscal third quarter as the result of an $8 billion write-down for its acquisition of consulting services firm Electronic Data Systems in 2008. Revenue slipped 5% to $29.7 billion from a year ago, and net income slid 14% to $2 billion.

"The PC market remains weak" and computers aren't selling, as shoppers wait for new product releases, CEO Meg Whitman said on a call with investors. "Our PC revenue was down 10% year-over-year driven by this weakness and aggressive pricing from our competitors. The reality is we are locked in serious competitive

As much as I don't want to imagine living life on a tablet and such, it's hard to deny the fact that these devices are really having a massive impact on things.

They seem to have a problem - not just because of tablets, but because their share of the desktop/laptop has slipped.

Last month, HP's U.S. share of the PC market — desktops and laptops — slipped 12.7% to 4 million units and Dell's slid 9.5% to 3.5 million, according to researcher Gartner. Meanwhile, Apple gained 4.3% to 1.9 million units from a year ago.

Interesting to see Apple's gain in that area.

I would think it's partially due to people who had iPhones, bought iPad's and want a bit more functionality now then they can get with their iPad, and they are looking at MacBook Pro's and iMac's instead since they have been so happy with their other Apple purchases...even if they have cost a bit more.

SIW2,

I've had numerous friends who are in the market for a new computer and they put something similar to the following on Facebook.
So my home computer is falling apart and it's time for a new computer, the big question..do I get a Mac or do I get another PC?.
So, really, this is the question they are starting with

And I kid you not, but most of the answers from their friends are as follows;
  • Mac all the way, we bought a Mac and we absolutely love it
  • Don't even think about it, get a MAC and never look back
  • Once you get a Mac, you will never want anything else ever again.

I just refrain from even commenting on these statuses. They are ruled by fashion, trends and what everybody else is getting. I tend to suggest based on facts, functionality and practicality.

In addition, have you noticed the product placement in TV these days. I see Mac's all of the time in TV shows and movies. People are persuaded by this, regardless if they really notice it or not.

It goes way beyond excellent marketing, they have word of mouth from customers. That's the best marketing ever.

I don't think they can continue at the same rate as they have done - not unless they bring out entirely new ground breaking products regularly - not very likely. But they don't need to.

Looks like they will continue to grow albeit at not such an incredible rate.

:ditto:

There's a reason why the mac died out from the mainstream in the 90s, it wasn't innovative anymore. Windows on the other hand was.

I bet that will happen again with Windows 8 tablet PCs and the ipad. It will take some time, but the ipad will go the way of the mac, only supported by the delirious, financially strapped, and easily brainwashed 14 percent.
