Hi there
I wonder if this might be a common occurrence which should warn Ms against rushing headlong into the tablet market.

My friend was going to buy an Ipad or the samsung tablet -- but I let him play around with the III -s smartphone.
OK the screen real estate is a bit smaller than a tablet but he decided that the smart phone was fine for anything he might have used a tablet for and for the rest a computer was fine.

One less customer for the tablet market -- he'd never seen the latest crop of smartphones --the latest smartphone from HTC is pretty good too.

I think tablets have peaked by now --I'm not going to apply complex statistical analysis based on ONE observation --but I have heard a lot of similar comments from people in the same boat -- a new smartphone does what they would use a tablet for and it's also A PHONE.

These types of comments must make Ms and others redefine the purpose of a tablet surely -- like give it an optional wireless keyboard and external storage (and then what is iit !!!! - you've guessed it--- a touch PC !!!! -- by incorporating that little pad the old IBM thinkpads had on their keyboards you could also have a decent "Mouse"!!.

Cheers
jimbo

That's pretty-much my position.

I've a P4 desktop machine, this desktop-replacement 'super-laptop', and a smaller
laptop (Acer AS5735 - Core 2 Duo 2Ghz, 3GB RAM Windows 8 CP 32-bit).

So I have plenty of power on tap here at home.

For my limited moblie-computing needs, my Android smartphone is more than
adequate, and if I'm going to be away from home for a few days, I take the
smaller laptop.

A tablet is simply un-necessary (for me), and I can't
justify the expense on a 'want' basis.

    Borderline pathetic.
i have a tablet, ipad with 3g.
i don't even remember, where i've put it, probably somewhere in garage...

can't say that i dislike the idea of a tablet, but with current shape - can't do any more than your smartphone due to exactly same software - it's pretty much useless.

I went to shop, with the need of mobile broadband. They offered me ipad for a price of 3g-wifi adapter, and further discount on broadband (nice :p), so why not, let's see if i can use it :p apart of huge improvement in comfort of playing angry birds on a big screen, it doesn't do anything else.

still waiting for a tablet, that will be 'capable' - a minimum of usb host (with support for mouse and stuff like ethernet adapter, rs232 adapter, various jtag adapters etc), full operating system with iptables/configurable firewall, full control over network settings (mac spoof, ifconfig/ipconfig). direct access to filesystem, not a freaking sandbox where every app have it's own folder and doesn't see anything else.
nice 7" screen and thin case, which will fit in side pocket of cargo trousers (and at least minimal impact protection) would be handy as well.
without all of above it's just a toy, not a tool.

I beg to differ. With Apple's iPad outselling PCs, the tablet market is red-hot.

I am an iPad user, but I simply don't like Apple. Right now the iPad is the only viable tablet I HMO. Yes it does lack many of the features I'd like to see, such as USB ports, memory slots, etc.

I also got a used Samsung Series 7 Slate over the weekend. While I like it, it won't replace the iPad for some time. There simply aren't that many Metro UI apps yet, and those that exist are of mediocre quality. I can tell you that where Windows 8 really shines is with the Metro UI on a tablet. I think that if all you want to do is desktop applications, then stay with Windows 7. I don't see touch having any real advantage for desktop applications.

I use my iPad almost 24/7. But I'd rather not use an Apple device. I didn't expect my new Samsung Slate to replace my iPad, at least not yet. I've been using Windows 8 on a desktop for a few weeks now. So I didn't expect the Samsung Slate to be a game changer. Instead it will be sort of like an Ultrabook for now. With a Bluetooth keyboard, it will act as a laptop replacement.

Microsoft has not opened their App Store fully to developers yet. This concerns me, as they really don't have much time to bring in a lot of new Metro UI apps. My hope is that there is a lot of development going on in the background that the rest of us don't know about. Otherwise Win RT will be a fiasco. I also plan to develop some Metro UI apps myself. But I simply don't have the time right now.

Microsoft has a real chance at giving the iPad some real competition. But a lot of things have to come together at the right time if the new Surface tablet is to succeed, mainly a lot of Metro UI apps at high quality.

I hear you loud and clear, jimbo, but I'm not too sure about that one either. I had a live-in that is a public grade school teacher here in the states. She has been teaching since the late 70's, so she's seen a lot of change through the years. I remember the day about 1-1/2 years ago when she asked me what I thought of the Ipad1 that she the had an option to buy through the school-group discount for, if I remember correctly, $450. I told her I thought it was a piece of crap, even for that price, partially for the price and I just simply think Apple products are overhyped Hollywood Yuppee crap. She stated that the schools here are gearing up to buy Ipads for ALL the kids and then would WiFi network together for viewing lessons, homework assignments, illistrations, etc. Even testing, so teachers can view afterwards or in live time to score them right in their pad. They will probably have an app that will auto score the tests insted of hand-written/hand-scoring-waste-of-paper-and trees saving much time for teachers. Some are now networking illistrations to a whiteboard monitors in the classrooms instaed of chalkboards. This is probaly nothing new to you since you work IT. This is just one sector, nevermind business office, manufacturing, and the average joe buying/using a pad. Think of the endless possibilities here!

Remember when the Feds took Gates to court? If I remember correctly, he was paying fines off by donating software to schools. What a great way to brain burn kids into using M$ products for probably the rest of there lives! That's what they'll learn and most likely that's all they'll ever want to learn.

I believe M$ sees the potential here. I think that's one of the reasons why they are putting it in top gear to get the Surface out along with 8.

If I was an app writer or an OEM I'd be working my A off right now to get into the show. There's going to be a fortune made here! I just can't bring myself to believe M$ is going to throw good money after bad.

I have a Droid2, but I personally will probably by a Surface, for there is not enough screen estate and I am doing more traveling and I need a keyboard.

BTW - We broke up because she ended up boring to me. We met in the spring and had a great time together during that summer. When school started, she was up at 5:30, out the door at 7:00, home at 5:00, do a few chores, make dinner, then sit to watch TV, and then to do what?....grade papers for 2 to 3 hours. I'm in the study behind mt PC for I hate the boob tube. Boring!!!! We just grew apart.

HypGyps, I am glad you think the apps are going to take off. I am more than a little freaked there aren't many apps right now.

My day job is as an MS ASP.NET web app developer. I was very interested in iOS app development, but didn't want to buy a Mac. I now have the tools & hardware to start developing apps for Metro UI. And I already know some of the MS languages, i.e. C# & VB.NET. Too bad I can't post any apps to the Store just yet.

Oh so you're a writer. Good! Like I stated, I'd be working my A off at this. Now it's time to make your fortune if you haven't already. I just think this will be huge.

I agree. I like Metro, but the apps are limited in quantity and what they do have now most suck! I disliked the mail app and tweaked Windows mail in. Some news apps one can't alt/arrow to navigate like a browser. I'm quite sure it'll be better at final release. Cost of them will be a different issue I'm sure.

Hi everyone

People don't yet get it through their brains that for loads of situations METRO on FULL SCREEN windows isn't going to fly for people who need to have CONCURRENT windows open ON THE SAME PAGE.

None of you tablet users have answered the SIMPLE and ("bleedin' obvious) question I've been asking "Ad Nauseam" since W8 first appeared -- how would you attempt to do something fairly simple on a PC like translating documents -- on a Tablet with touch only or a hideous virtual keypad -- you really DO need to have the documents side by side in the SAME WINDOW ( you might even need 4 or 5 views - but they do need t o be displayed CONCURRENTLY - NOT IN SEPARATE FULL SCREEN WINDOWS-- can't be done in Metro so not fit for purpose in these types of situations ---End of).

so please 24/7 Ipad users etc PLEASE AGAIN FOR ONCE ANSWER THE QUESTION --how do you (or would you) use a tablet to translate docs using Metro.

I think you might be rushing back to your PC again.

Cheers
jimbo

the ipad simply cannot and NEVER EVER EVER EVER...be called or considered a PC. Outrage. That would mean that my ipod touch that I had four years ago was a miniPC, which it wasn't. Just because something has a large screen, internet access, and run simple apps doesn't constitute it being a PC. If so, the ATM that I go to or the Red Box kiosks that some of my friends go to are PCs. Are they? Nope.

But, a Windows slate can do what you ask of, like the Microsoft Surface. Honestly, I think the Desktop in itself is a HUGE selling point of Windows 8 tablets. You can have iTunes installed to add music or take pictures off a simpleton ipad and try to attempt a backup though iTunes. You can have Office 2010 or 2013 installed. You can have Photoshop installed. You can cut, copy and then paste files from your Windows tablet to a USB drive and copy it over to another Windows PC without being the derp that emails himself so many files that HE is his most frequently contacted person. You can even use bittorrent clients and illegally download music (I know, a bad thing, but it's a tablet that can do that).

On top of that, you can have interface that has been built better for touch but is easy to use with a mouse, which makes switching inputs simply easier. You can have apps that keep information updated at a glance. YOU, can have it ALL. :)

Must as I would like one I am not sure that I can have it.
It all depends on the price here in the UK it does have to be value for money
If $$$ convert to 1:1 to £££ then I am not sure it will be value for money
Microsoft adopt different pricing structures for each market, that's the downer.
Only time will tell let's hope I am completely wrong.
