Seems Apple released a security patch for Mac users, and without asking for permission or otherwise making any announcement they installed a security update on our computers.

(Reuters) - Apple Inc has pushed out its first-ever automated security update to Macintosh computers to help defend against newly identified bugs that security researchers have warned could enable hackers to gain remote control of machines.

Yeah because it's impossible for Microsoft to test their updates on all the possible PC configurations that they can't guarantee that there'll be no glitches. But Apple can because there is only a limited configuration possibility in their totally closed ecosystem.

You can have Apple and have superior security... Or have Windows 8.1, which also has Superior Security (as long as you know how to use Windows, and not download 3rd Party "Driver Repair/System Security" software). I am not willing to pay for the premium Apple asks, and I am not a fan of buying software.

I think Apple is great for those who are PC illiterate, but you need to be careful with Apple. They purposefully slow their older hardware so that you are more tempted to buy the newest hardware. Read this article. There is a chance this a conspiracy theory and that this claim is false, but Apple is a Corporation. The purpose of a Corporation is to make as much money as possible. Their only sole responsibility is to follow Federal and State law, not code of ethics. Since you sign their Terms of Agreement, they can modify their software anytime they want without your permission. Besides, Apple has had some bad publicity that was covered up... Check this out. Apple is also not known for being conscious about Human Rights, but this is the price we pay for having extreme capitalism :).

Um, this wasn't done because Apple could do it without glitches due to limited config options. It's the first time they have ever done it. I just found it interesting that they did it, without upsetting the entire user base.

Microsoft is also a corporation. I'm unsure what that comment was really supposed to mean.

I have a MacBook Pro and am far from computer illiterate. As far as an Apple premium goes, it's not really much of an issue anymore. If you try to match the spec, weight, speed, and build quality, a pc is in the same ballpark. The issue with Apple is that they don't really have a low-end option. And while they do have less upgrade-ability, so do many new pc ultrabooks and the like. So, that's becoming more of a trend.

I'm not sure what the comment meant, 'i don't like to buy software'. There is lots of free software on the Mac, I haven't had to buy anything. And I didn't have to pay anything to upgrade from OSX Mavericks to OSX Yosemite. Going from 7 to 8 wasn't free.

Some time ago Apple switched from PowerPC CPUs to Intel, story was the PowerPC couldn't get made much faster. My MacBook Pro of mid-2010 has an Intel i7 CPU and runs as 64-bit, never have seen where Apple used AMD CPUs. I originally had Snow Leopard and a choice to change it to 64-bit, no re-install, just reboot for the change to complete. The upgrade to Mountain was about $30, the upgrade to Mountain Lion was about $20 and the upgrade to Yosemite was free.

AMD made the original specifications for 64bit chips, so AMD64 is the generic term for 64bit CPUs, like Kleenex is for tissues or coke for soda pop.

Hi there

with all this "You pays your money and takes your choice". With the amount of scamming etc going on I think ANY user of ANY OS would be advised to install any security upgrades recommended by the manufacturer of the OS.

I don't have a Mac but if I did I don't think this would have bothered me even if it's the first time apple have done it.

Cheers and happy XMAS

Yes they are both Corporations, but Apple is restrictive to maximize profit. Bill Gates is a well known Humanitarian so I have much more respect for him than Steve Jobs. Jobs was apparently a nasty person. Of course, these are opinions as there is little evidence to prove it, but just how Apple's business model is to maximize profit and poor customer service I believe it. I honestly just don't like Apple. I've had bad experiences with them.

My Girlfriends MBP crashed and had to replace the HDD. She lost all of her apps that were preloaded on the Operating System, such as iPhoto, the word processor, etc. They told me I had to re-buy all the apps and that I should have backed up my configuration. Afterward, I was asked to pay a one time fee for the "customer support." Apparently Apple support isn't free.

You can keep your Mac. Lol.

I do not think that is at all why they are restrictive. They are restrictive to promote a certain consistent computing experience.

Gates is a well known Humanitarian so I have much more respect for him than Steve Jobs. Jobs was apparently a nasty person.
I didn't know either of them personally, but Bill Gates does give a ton of time and money to charities. Steve Jobs, from what I have read, was rather ambitious and expected a lot of out people. He got the shaft numerous times in his career, so that might have fueled his fire just a bit.

Of course, these are opinions as there is little evidence to prove it, but just how Apple's business model is to maximize profit and poor customer service I believe it.
I thought many loved Apple due to really good customer service.

Depending upon the age of the MBP, the experience might have been different. These apps used to be part of the iLife suite and are pre-installed and used to come with the install media with the MBP. With newer MBP's, they are preinstalled, but you don't get media anymore. Instead, you get them through the App Store, but you have to go through the "purchased" link once you are logged in to see the apps you already own. You should have been able to reinstall them from there. From lots of reading, this is a common issue and people often cannot find the software again.

I use Windows, OSX and Linux. They all have their pluses and their minuses. Sorry to hear your experience with Apple wasn't all that great.

Of course, I do install all of the updates. I do it for Windows, I do it for Linux.

The point that I was trying to make was that I think many Windows enthusiasts would have been furious if they turned on their computer to find that it just went ahead and installed an update without giving them any choice. Just look at the number of people who don't think they are necessary and elect to NOT install them as they feel they do nothing but slow down their computer. Heck, some even try to research and determine if each and every update is applicable to them. (Ain't nobody got time for that..is what I always think).

I was fine with the automatic update. I'm fine with Windows doing Windows update automatically. But I think that some would have cried FOWL extremely loudly if this had happened to them.

There were cases when Win8 got updated to 8.1 without asking any permission.
Honestly I don't believe it. People install things without thinking (yeah, whatever, click YES) and then it does something they didn't expect (I never asked for that man). If you can upgrade from 8 to 8.1 without agreeing to I'll eat your hat.

However if you are saying you can upgrade from 8 to 8.1 by mistake by clicking randomly with no thought to the consequences then yes, probably.

Difficult to believe for me too but there are some claims on our forum.

Then they are forgetful or lying. I have a Macbook and got the un-requested security fix. Do I care? No. Presumably Apple thought about it more than I care to.

I install Windows updates without reading the release notes (sorry) and my Logitec internet radio updated it's firmware last month without any discussion at all.

Sure you can try to check everything (build you own Linux for example) but you'd never have time to leave your house if you didn't assume some people are not actually out to get you and have other fish to fry.

I like to (and have time) to review all the optional updates, few times there were unsuitable drivers in them and other ones plumb not needed.
