Productivity - How can we REALLY measure it !!

Hi there

I see a lot of stuff in the press (both I.T and other) about "Worker Productivity".

Can some management type here explain what this REALLY means -- for example if you are on an "Event Driven" process -- for example on a "Help " type facility - the amount of work coming in is un-predictable as well as its nature -- so you can't say you "Need to fix 6 problems a day" or whatever.

If you were say in a Symphony Orchestra -- should you as a musician add more notes to a Mozart violin concerto or play the piece quicker !!!.

Same with "GDP" -- if you have people say issuing passports or Drivers Licenses - the contribution towards the economy is meaningless.

What about Doctors even -- you can't say he / she should see x number of patients a day --each one is different -- some might require 5 mins other several HOURS.

Our whole economy seems to be based on totally absurd meaningless statistics !!!!

Anyway have a Happy Xmas and new year.

Well written jimbo. I've begun to feel it's just a buzz word for corporation bosses to be able to get rid of the expensive union staff/employees and hire younger ones thru temp firms for less money.

Productivity huh?

Well, for my boss at work, here's a simple equation as to what productivity means for him.

Productivity = Underlings x Overtime

    This is a custom made build PC that I put together. It may be low on the spec sheet but its decent enough to run a few games.
I work as a developer in a large software corporation. Regardless of how many tasks I am given, I am expected to complete them by a certain date. If that means I need to work 10 hours a day, then I am expected to work 10 hour days. If unexpected events occur that effect my productivity, it may then mean I need to work 12 hour days to compensate. If I take time off or get sick or injured, I'm still expected to meet the date.

The measure of productivity for my job is "did you get everything done?". If yes, then you are productive. If no, then you are not productive and need to concentrate on "time management" (management code for work more OT). Since I am salaried, I don't receive any additional compensation for working OT.

Years ago, I worked as a manufacturing manager. We measured productivity by how many widgets a worker completed. Only the hours actually worked were used in the equation. If there was a work slowdown, a holiday, they were sick, on vacation or otherwise not at work that time simply wasn't counted. Even time spent in meetings or training was subtracted from the equation since it was considered to be beyond the worker's control.

    Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.

That's the thing about salaries; it looks good when you sign the contract, but when you start having to push a lot of overtime over a long time hourly wages can be better. There was a time that for about 7 months I was making more than my shift leader because I was working 2 hours longer during the week and on Saturdays with the Goods Receiving Area boss in the High Rack storage area adjusting the beams.

I work in tech support and I do a lot of overtime on a daily basis. The overtime pay I get can sometimes surpass what my supervisor gets.

(Productivity)=CEO BONUS+SHARE HOLDER PAYOUTS)= Gross profits-taxes-insurance-As tiny wages as possible-sludge fund

In my work place you can see how productive a person is by seeing if the number of pieces on a job each day over time increases or decreases the more you do the job.
