Now I'm an ex windows 8 forums lurker

Good morning from Germany, my name is Cliff and I just wanted to introduce myself. I've been lurking the windows 7 and 8 forums for years now, getting the help and information just using the search function. Now that I have bought a new desktop and finally have windows 8.1 I thought I would sign up.
I've been using windows 7 for years now, but since I've started using 8.1 for about a month I do not understand why so many people refuse to accept it. IT ROCKS. Especially File Explorer, it's so much more powerful. And the apps screen with it's overview is much faster than a start menu to find something (this could be because I've been using ubuntu for a few years now and it's kinda like the DASH), I uninstalled the POKKI start menu after about a week when it started downloading stuff w/o my permission and phoning home. Also for programs I download and install myself, I always make a desktop shortcut and have "show desktop icons" turned off, and have in the taskbar, the Desktop Toolbar turned on and placed next to the start screen icon with only the trashcan showing (show title and show text are turned off) for fast access, another plus with this is you can find anything in your system with slide menus.
I only install programs that I really need or that windows doesn't already have, microsoft has done a really good job with 8.1 here, I have three less 3rd party programs now. With this rule I haven't had a single BSOD since April 2012 when I was experimenting with different so called "system optimizers", until I read either in windows 7 forums or more likely How-to-Geek:"Let windows take care of itself".
Oh yeah one last thing, after the first few weeks and getting everything set up how I want it and upgrading the RAM and C. disk to an SSD, I haven't had any app or explorer crashes, 8.1 seems much more stable than 7 in that way too. My reliability history has only blue info icons in it.

I suggest a program like Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download for backing up your OS.

The Standard edition has a boot time menu. I use it & like it.

I've been using OneKey Recovery from Cyberlink that came with my Lenovo(about the only program from the bundled software that wasn't crapware). I have one perfect system image on a usb hdd that stays packed up in my closet, and one on my second internal HDD for data, libraries and backups that I update weekly. I also have made a custom recovery image that I learned how to do at How-to-Geek.
