Solved SSD - Does More $$$ mean better?

I am looking at a 512GB SSD and wondering why the Samsung 850 Pro is about double the price of the Crucial MX100. Their specifications are almost the same, the big difference is warranty with Crucial offering 3 years and Samsung 10 years. The other difference is that Samsung offers software that uses your system ram to make things speedier but then for the same price I could buy two Crucial SSDs and set them up as a stripped raid set to really make things fly and get double the storage. :dinesh:

and the winner is?

I've only owned one SSD. I'll let others relate their experiences. But I would say as well as specs find the drives on sites with many user reviews. In real life things don't always perform up to the specified rating.

I debated over these 2 drives when thinking of purchasing one, i settled with the Crucial MX100 512GB and i am pretty satisfied with it. Ratings show for the price and performance it is a good deal. MHO. Dollars do not always mean better. Besides if really search get a good deal. Keep an eye out on this site, got a good deal here http://www.newegg.com

Besides price another thing to look out for is does your motherboard manufacturer include it in their "approved" devices list. Not being on that list may just mean they have not gotten around to testing that SSD but then you take a risk.

Heard of this with RAM, but never with a drive so far. Look at OP specs.
Think OP be fine Motherboards - MAXIMUS VI HERO - ASUS
I have lesser board then this and mine did good.

I would not pay double the price for the Samsung.

When it comes to speed nothing beats a ram drive but then you better have an uninterruptible power supply. The Samsung 850 Pro comes with software that does ram caching to speed things up and I am guessing it saves to the SSD any chance it gets so that if there is a power outage you won't end up losing a whole day's worth of work.

I will go with the cheaper Crucial SSD because it is for an old laptop. If it speeds up the boot time the owner will be happy.:D

My system is 2 years old, not as quick as some on here, i did want to go above my budget myself and buy Samsung received good ratings, one most popular ones to buy. As said i am happy with Crucial i even bought a second one for data and games.
Oh, here i was looking at your specs thinking was for this board, then you say laptop. :confused: i did not look to the right to see you had a SSD listed on this system. And working on this for someone else.

It`s all in the name, but Samsungs always claim to have better specs. I have an Intel 530, an OCZ Vertex 4, and a Crucial M550. They are all great, but I want to get a Samsung EVO or 840 Pro next.

Specs aren't usually that relevant. A few more megabytes on reads per second won't be noticeable. Biggest gain in SSD is ultra low access times.

Also, back in the day, super high spec units often had sandforce controller issues. I'll take data integrity over the highest speeds any day.
