PC MAKER HP has seen its revenue growfor the first time in three years to $27.58bn, helped by stronger-than-expected growth of its PC division, which grew 12 percent year-on-year.

Looks like reports of the pc's imminent demise were, er, premature....

Perhaps people are waking up to the fact that phones/tablets can't actually replace PCs (just like what happened with netbooks).

I think PCs will stay around for a looong time. But there is a place for the toys too - especially for the young people. But most of those don't have to do productive work.

Did you all read the article? I'd have to check the numbers to be sure, but what she said sounds as though the mobile devices were dragging them out of the slump more so than tower PCs. And just what does "ageing installed base" and "the reinvention of how we compute" exactly mean? Tower PCs vs mobile perhaps?

They look nice (the HP page didn't really say much; the Surface page was more informative).
They probably would be suitable for the majority of users who are "in the market" for a new machine.

My budget only stretches to ~$200 a year, so I replace/upgrade components in my desktop.

I prefer to use a desktop (I don't like using laptops).
I played with an early iPad and I wasn't impressed (it was surprisingly heavy).

What would be fantastic, would be the capability to connect all of your (compatible) devices together and use them to create your own Grid computing setup.

They'd have to connect via a special (optical?) connector (and high speed bus).
Any device could then draw on the spare processing power of the other devices.

Connect your i7 tablet to your i7 desktop and either could function as if they had two i7 CPUs onboard.

It isn't surprising their sales have came back up. I read an article a few weeks back and got it confrimed with an HP rep I know on the BestBuy forums that they more or less wiped their tablet department as it wasn't creating the revenue they were hoping for. You can only go up from the bottom!

HP makes some great products though so it's good to read this stuff.
