Quest for a cheap cell phone. Tracphone?

Thought this would be a good forum to ask this question. I am... older. I'm not a big cell phone user, no use for texting, games, etc. I like to have one for emergencies and that's it. I had a dirt cheap Verizon plan, was paying $24 a month, 50 minutes, which was perfect. Then I got lured into getting an iPhone. I went from $24 to $90 a month and was barely using it. Then I downgraded to a cheap flip phone thinking I'd save money. I thought it was free but realized I'm paying a monthly installment for it. I'm now paying $66 a month after activation fee, so I didn't really save that much. And it's a terrible phone.

So, is a Tracphone the best alternative? How do they work? Do you simply purchase the phone and the minutes and start using it? Do you pay a carrier as well? I'm tempted to get one but want to make sure I'm not making another uninformed decision. Any suggestions appreciated. I would probably lose my current number but that's okay.
