I have an old PC which I am looking into putting Windows 2000 or NT 4 on. Basically, I want to know which of the two would be a better choice to install on this.

Specs:
768 MB of RAM
~300 MHz Cyrix II-M CPU
6 GB HDD
ATI Rage 3D 4 MB video card

Is there anything specifically you want to accomplish? I wouldn't honestly run either of those OS's for anything these days.

Yours system specs are more than adequate for either. Windows 2000 is a more modern OS and is easier to use. Much of what is taken for granted on a modern OS is simply not available in NT 4. It also has better (but not good) compatibility with more modern software and hardware devices. Windows 2000 unless you have a specific need for NT4.

2000 has plug and play and that alone makes it a no brainer imo.

Hi there.

Absolutely -- Windows NT is a pig to get anything done with - especially with USB type devices.

However to make W2000 actually useable - you'll need to ensure Service pack 4 is installed if you can find it from anywhere.

I think this link still works though.

Download Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Network Install for IT Professionals from Official Microsoft Download Center

OT but as a matter of interest - why don't you try and use a modern Linux distro on that hardware rather than a very old (even though a good one) OS. You should get a much better experience all round.

Does it have to run Windows? You could install Ubuntu on it of you're using it for web browsing, email, etc...

Windows 2000 would let you get the most out of it. Windows NT 4.0 is okay for fiddling around with for nostalgic purposes but isn't really suitable for everyday use on a workstation anymore.
