Windows XP making main news on Belgian Radio stations

Hi there.

The imminent demise of Windows XP (tomorrow) is being mentioned regularly on several main Belgian Radio stations - including even the Classical Music station KLARA -- not normally known for its involvement with anything remotely technical - especially where computers are concerned.

It's warning people that as from tomorrow it's no longer supported and users should upgrade as soon as possible.

Never heard this type of stuff before as a main News item on a National Radio station. !!

Cheers

Nothing like a bunch of media hype to generate revenues, but would MS stoop to such antics?

If MS really wanted to screw XP customers, they could just cancel their License. As you don't own the Software you just have a License to use it and there is probably some clause in the EULA for that.

That would royally piddle people off, but since they are killing off XP, they are basically forfeiting their interest in it, financial and creative. That's what they did for Media Player 6.4, giving rise to MPC-HC. I really don't think they CAN renege the liscence, they either own it and are maintaining it, or basically we can do anything we want with it now.

The last 3 puters I've repaired have been XP, they Update Server is still live, I'll keep using it until it's shut down, but by now, someone has packed up all the most important updates and is maybe going to offer them on a site. They did that with Windows 98, they even made it so Windows 98 plugged into their Update server, they set it up so 98 would update through their site. I used that for a year after 98 went down, cos Windows ME was almost as bad as Vistpoop. But MS vindicated themselves with Windows 2000.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I really wish that would happen here in the States so people can be ACTUALLY aware of such...

In the German news there is also a lot of chatter about the future of the Microsoft systems. The German goverment made the news warning people to move to Windows 8. This is the only report in English I have seen.

I guess it was directed at the goverment agencies for security reasons. But since it made such a big noise in the general news, you wonder how many people feel inclined to follow that advice.

I personally can care less. I have nothing to hide.

The NSA affair has gotten way out of hand. Our founding fathers would roll in their graves if they could hear what's going on today.

The NSA doesn't need a back door. They go through the front.

Well, I really don't know much about that. I only hear all of Europe being upset about it - exept the UK because they do the same. And probably other services too.

There is not one day when the topic is not in the news. The German parliament now wants to invite this guy Snowden to give them all the details. Question is whether he is not going to fool them.

They would, except they made the mistake of allowing congressional members to serve indefinitely, effectively taking the patriarchy of England of the time and divided it up 535 different ways to screw us over 535 different ways on a daily basis...

Which is surprising how Europe is all upset about it and other countries are threatening to cut off ties from the US but yet here, everyone's all indifferent about the NSA and would rather grumble about versus DEMANDING action or at least properly protesting about. "Like this picture if you want the NSA out of facebook!" That'll show them!

I think that is mainly because a lack of information in the US. The few sources like the Washington Post do not reach a lot of people.

That is the advantage if you have access to news of many countries (and speaking a few languages helps). You don't only get the news that YOUR goverment prescribes. In that sense the US is a village - but not a global village.

It's in the news daily, especially online since all the tech companies are against it. It's definitely not good for online businesses and there's a lot of them now.

90% of the American people are ignorant or turn their heads as to what's really going on. For the sake of national security my rear!

Or window someone accidently left open...

I saw a disclosure earlier showing that the email and VPN of the Belgian intelligence services was exploitable with HeartBleed until earlier today. Ouch. (If it wasn't a honeypot).

I'm not sure where you get that 'indifference to the NSA', but it isn't as widespread in the US as you believe.

I hear about it from people who work for the government, they don't like it.

Doesn't matter if you have something to hide or not. If some government official thinks you are hiding something, you will get more investigatiopn than you should be subjected to.

Just look at the guy who fnially got an apology for the explosion at the Olympic games at Atlanta. Ooops, he had nothing to hide, as he didn't do it.
