Popcorn Time is a PC desktop movie player that allows you to get streaming bit torrent movies in real time on demand - without having to first download the file to your hard drive, or worrying about torrents with virus's or movie phishing web sites.
This app offers the choice of 720P or 1080P for many movies. Because this app streams bit torrent movies, it can stream movies that are copyrighted and or are illegally pirated versions of movies. Check with the laws in your country before trying Popcorn Time.
Popcorn Time is controversial because it was designed using open source tools. The designers made the app as an experiment, a proof of concept their idea would work. A few days after they released the app for testing, they closed the project down due to fears over legal issues.
However, they released all the source code for the project on GetHUb before they shut down the project - now anyone (who can compile the source code and do a little programming) can make a clone of the app and release it. - And somebody already has - A popular illegal movie torrent "Scene Releaser" named YIFI has forked the open source project and is continuing development along with the open source community. They are planning on adding TV shows and other niceties.
THE BIG problem with all this is many people feel this is encouraging average normally law abiding citizens to easily, and elegantly watch pirated movies. The selection is better than Netflix as this article by the Boston Globe points out Popcorn Time is panic time for Hollywood - Business - The Boston Globe
Many feel this will cause the downfall of Hollywood itself as we know it today, such as Napster caused the music industry to change it's business model, so could this cause Hollywood to change it's model. Something many people feel the time is right for.
I can see writers, actors, production studios etc all going on strike. Movie rentals and DVD/Blueray purchases will decline. There is No good way for Hollywood to stop the proliferation of this app unless they force the powers that be to change how the internet is run completely - they would have to strip us of more freedoms to do that I fear. This single app could be the catalyst for change from a monetary model to some non monetary system - which could be better for all, like the world of Start Trek in the 24 the century, where no one uses or need money anymore.
What do you think?
The project is currently in beta. Version 2.8 is freely available to download and use.
