Hello. I want to install Windows XP (32-bit version) on my laptop. Do you know how to boot XP from USB ? This question may sound simple, but it's not as simple as installing Windows 7 or 8 from USB. I've tried some programs (Rufus, WinToFlash) but it didn't work. Maybe i did something wrong, despide i've followed some tutorials from the internet. If you have the right steps, please, let me know. Thanks !

Installing Windows XP on a SATA hard drive is not a straight-forward task as Windows XP does not recognize the SATA drive. In order to install operating systems such as Windows XP on SATA drives, the latest SATA drivers are required.Download SATA drivers for the motherboard from the website and integrate them with the XP installation CD using software such as nLite. SATA drivers can also be installed as third party drivers; you will be prompted during the installation process. Without proper SATA drivers, installing Windows XP on a SATA hard drive is not possible as SATA mode would have to be disabled in the BIOS to continue with the installation.

How old is the laptop? The last time I tried to install XP from a thumb drive the BIOS on my XP era PC was just not up to it.

I think you have enough advice for the specific problem at hand. But if you are unable to resolve your problem, I suggest you install XP in virtual with either VMware Player or Virtual box. Both programs are free and should not give you any installation problems right from an .iso stored on your system.

Running a system in virtual has the advantage that you can run it together with the host system side by side. Here is an example that happens to be Windows 7 and Windows 8, but XP would be the same.

As the last sentence says, just go into the BIOS and change the Controller to use IDE Mode instead of AHCI (SATA).

I think this is a Win8 system. What about UEFI and XP.

Good point. If it is a Win 8 machine with UEFI then the OP will need to enable the legacy boot option.

My laptop is Sony VAIO VPCSE1E1E (was made in 2011). This laptop supports booting from USB (this option is in BIOS). I have Windows 8 installed right now, and i want to have both 8 (64-bit) and XP (32-bit version). Regarding virtual machines, i don't want to stick with them. The problems that concerns me are, will i be able to make the USB bootable (like Windows 7 or 8) and if so, what are the things that i have to modify in order to be able to dual-boot both 8 and XP ?

Yes. WinSetupFromUSB.

"What it can be used for adding to your USB stick/disk: Multiple sets of Windows setup files- XP, 2000, 2003, Vista, WIndows 7, Server 2008, Windows 8, Server 2012, both 32 and 64 bit versions are supported."

what are the things that i have to modify in order to be able to dual-boot both 8 and XP ?

If you install Windows XP after Windows 8, the Windows XP installation routine cannot recognize the Windows 8 operating system installation and the computer only boots into Windows XP.

And I don't know if your computer is compatible with Windows XP and where can you find Windows XP drivers for Sony VAIO VPC-SE1E1E.

It looks like my laptop does support Windows XP. I find 3 drivers on Vaio Support website, under 'Windows XP' section (called SATA Driver (Intel) HIPM Disable Registry Patch, VPCS SATA Driver non-RAID and VPCS SATA Driver RAID) and one package (XP downgrade installer v4.0 for VAIO notebooks).
