Monster-MicroSD

It's pretty amazing how much portable storage has evolved. That's the equivalent of about 88,888 1.44MB floppy disks. So at 3.3mm thick, the disks would be about 293.33m (962ft) high if they were stacked up, or nearly the height of 'The Shard'.

And they say the consumer market is quite a bit behind the military, so it kinda makes you wonder what technology is out there that we don't know about yet.

New technology continues to blow my mind. I can only imagine all the people wanting to use a MicroSD card for their new builds. lol

These microSD cards blow my mind. I worked in IBM's disk drive business for 20 years, started out working on the IBM 3350 disk drive.
ibm3350sm.jpg
It was the size of a washer/dryer pair, had 2 disk packs each holding 300MB and required 220VAC. A 128GB microSD card holds as much data as 212 of those drives!

I worked at the main facility in San Jose where bldg 026 was and worked in a few different bldgs in my 20 years there: 004, 005, 012, 051, 076 & 077. Santa Theresa was a programming lab a few miles south. The main facility is gone now, they are building a mall and condos there. The Santa Theresa lab is still there but has been renamed to Silicon Valley lab.

I have not been there in many years. I was there from 70 to 74 when we developed the VSAM access method. I have been in the new Santa Theresa lab out in the boonies (at least it was the boonies 25 years ago). I had a house only 1 mile down the road from the plant site. It was a good time. When I got there, a 3 bedroom house cost $20.000.

I just bought a Sandisk Ultra 16GB and an Ultra 32GB SD card, 30.MB/s. The 16 was 20 bucks off and the 32 was 30 bucks off. The only down side is my laptop won't boot from the SD card slot. :( I was hoping to be able to install Windows from an SD card. I didn't need a Micro card so I went with a normal SD card.

The original specs for my Samsung tablet showed support for up to a 32GB card; when the Android 'Jelly Bean' update came through it commenced to support 64GB cards, which I'm using now.
Maybe with the next update......?!?!?!

(I'd hate to shell out 200 bucks to find out I was wrong though! :D)

The problem with these itty bitty devices is that they are really difficult to handle. I always have to ask the wife to handle the MicroSD cards in the tablets and phone. And the SIM cards are even worse.

LOL, I know what you mean. I've gotta get in there with the stylus just to eject the micro SD card out of it's slot! :)
