Coming Soon: Free Internet From Space - NationalJournal.com

Google has their own project going too, called Loon. And there is even another project apart from Google and the article above, that plans on doing this as well. (I forget the company or body.)

When the internet was created, it was intended to be free. Completely free. How nice would it be to finally say "good riddance" to an unnecessary bill just to pay for something that should be free?

"That's part of a project called Outernet, which hopes to launch hundreds of tiny satellites—known as CubeSats—to provide Internet to every person on Earth. Forty percent of the world's people currently don't have access to the Web. In a little more than a year, Outernet plans to have a fleet of 24 satellites operational and testing to pave the way for a globe-spanning network."

Edit: This is also very interesting and a 4th option in development by German hackers that are "bent on fighting the powers that be." More power to them, and ultimately, us.

From what I understand, the engineers are trying to determine which elevation is optimal for services like this to work best.

If the satellites are too low, the coverage area is not enough (they would need too much money to have enough satellites.)

If the satellites are too high, then ping goes out the window and anything real-time is not well used.

They're working on it all as far as I know, to find what is optimal for all situations and circumstances. The real answer to your question is that it will increase in speed as time goes on, just like anything else involving computers and computer science.

Are you allowed to use Skype yet though or is it still blocked? When I lived there 4 years ago the government telephone company didn't want people to use it as they lost revenue so you had to go to Bahrain even to download the software.

haha

But nowadays, Skype is not secure like it used to be, so governments don't care. Actually, they probably like people using it now.

I don't think it is security. Making international calls on Skype is free. Making international calls through the government owned telecom company costs 50c a minute (or sometimes much more). That is all.

When I tried to use Skype it would say "The Government bans this as it may be pornography". What they meant was "The government bans this as you should pay 50c a minute to use the government owned telephone service".

Bless them.

At the moment I work in KSA - do they ban Skype? No.

The US government-business complex will never let free internet happen, selling us access is too much of a cash cow for the business interests that run the country.

Heh, they'd have to stop Google too, then.

I sincerely doubt Google would be setting this up if they believed they would be stopped.

The US government-business complex

You sound like a conspiracy theorist :) You want to know something interesting (at least I think it is). In France if you go bankrupt there are certain things that are part of your human rights that can not be taken away from you. Water, Electricity and (amazingly) Internet.

You are on your own for food and drink though.

In Denmark we have an alternative choice of Internet telephone, in our broadband package. It makes no difference to my ISP whether I choose to continue with the normal telephone or use the internet choice - I still have to pay them for my package connection.

I think the idea is cool but the only problem I am seeing is that I am a firm believer that something in which provides a service for free through the use of expensive equipment and paid hours since someone has to maintain it will get out paced by paid services with the speeds and technology available. I do think it is great but I doubt I would use it being I am sure my cable provider would provide higher speeds then what they could.
