Hi everybody
I used to Love going to the movies - now though I find I can get a much more pleasurable experience watching at home - especially in a dedicated "cinema room" in my Loft space with some friends using one of those nice HUGE TV's -- waiting for the new really big 4K 80 inch monsters to appear.

The modern movie theatre experience now seems ruined for me by poor sound mixing -- deafening special effects but spoken dialog mixing is poor, youngsters mobile phone" etiquette (or usually Lack of it), exhorbitant parking / transport charges - expensive and poor quality food / drink and seats that feel like they were bought from Mexican Railways on E-bay. - Nothing against Mexico --have had great time in that country -- lovely food as well - but on the whole the indigenous population is rather "smaller" than we are !!!

There are decent films out there - especially if you include non US / UK one's so it's not the lack of quality films that stop me from going.

I'd recommend as an example particularly the recently released ICELANDIC film - The Deep - got decent reviews around the world - has loads of foreign language sub titles so you can understand it.

Djúpið (2012) - IMDb (Title means The Deep).

I'd suggest to Movie theatre owners -- get the Sound mix right and please INSTALL MOBILE PHONE SIGNAL JAMMERS!!!! - otherwise your industry will DIE like it did in the early 1970's and this time it WON'T return as the home experience with modern technology can all but replicate the "Big Screen" experience.

The strange thing is that these same youngsters who actually go to the OPERA (there are more than you think) wouldn't dream of using the phone in the opera house so it must be something about the movie theatre "ambience".

I can imagine the next generation of High school kids asking their teachers What was "The Cinema" !!!

Cheers
jimbo

Hi Jimbo, have to agree. Back in November last year I purchased a 70" Sharp Aqua (Sweet), and a new Panasonic Home Theater System (again sweet). The good thing is the closest home is about a mile down the road, hence I am able to turn up the sound to a level that allows we to enjoy the movie or show that I am watching. . . :D

Oh my. I remember our first TV. 1957. Somewhere around a 14 inch diagonal. It had rabbit ears antenna. The top and bottom of the screen was straight and the sides were curved. Black and white of course. In 1960 I went to the theater for the first time. "Please Don't Eat The Daisies" was the movie. I'll never forget how huge the screen looked to me! And in color!

I helped a nephew hang his 60-inch 3D flat screen a few months ago. My fiance's brother installs home theaters as a profession. A magnificent system he has in his living room. I just have a 36-inch. Unbelievable technology we have today.

I agree with you, Jim. I'd rather stay home and watch a movie, but the fiance.... She likes to go to the movies, so off we go. Cha-Ching! She's worth every penny spent though. :)

80-inch screen > Wow!

My HT setup cost me $700 (including a Wii U and a used PS3) and has surround sound and a 1080i 51" TV. I find it just as nice as a theatre, and with a larger selection of (admittedly older) movies.

I must say staying in and watching movies on my 110" is certainly better than going to the cinema.

We don't go to all that many movies anymore.... choosing to stay in a watch on the 60"plasma. My pc doubles as a htpc, and I have the Logitech Z-5500 5.1 sound system hooked up to it for movies. We don't bother with the 5.1 for the tv epps we watch, just the movies.

We may eventually upgrade to an 80".... Costco carries a really nice Sharp one.

Hi there
Even the Wharfedale's are fantastic -- Strangely enough I still play MINIDISCS on an Onkyo piece of gear - they still sound fantastic too -- but I wouldn't have liked to have been the delivery person(s) setting up that screen -- I shudder to think of them dropping it !!.

I think you've made us all jealous -- now I'll have to attempt to win the Euro millions on the Euro lottery !!!.

Cheers

Just be aware, that with fixed pixel televisions there is such a thing as having too big of a TV for a room. You sit too close and they don't look nearly as good. I've got a 50" Panasonic Plasma in my living room. While I would like to get a bigger TV, I won't because a 50" is about as big as that room can support.

Some friends of mine didn't believe me and bought a 65" for their much smaller room. Then they asked me to come over and help them set it up and configure it because they didn't feel that it looked as nice as mine did. It just so happens, they have a big picture window, so I asked them to go outside and stand about 4 feet behind their couch. Turns out, the TV looked fabulous with 4 more feet. Unfortunately, they would have to sit outside to get that 4 feet.

In addition to my 50" Panasonic Plasma, I run a Marantz SR-5007 Home Theater receiver and run Polk Monitor 50's for my fronts, a CS1 center channel, R15's for my rears, and a Polk Sub.

I definitely enjoy seeing a movie in the theater more. It's just an experience, ya know? That being said those ppl next to you in the theater always on their phone is totally annoying and it's so expensive! So I'm conflicted sometimes. But if I really want to see a movie with amazing special efftects I'll go to the theater (despite the ridiculous price).

I prefer to stay at home & watch a movie especially since they get mad at the theater if you try to bring your own beverage. I mean seriously, the usher got in my face & made me spill my 12 yr old scotch...:p
