I HATE Touch - but why almost No 3-D screens / application

Hi there
While I (in common with a lot of people) do not particularly like or want TOUCH screens, however 3-D (even with those stupid glasses -- and that technology will change soon so the glasses won't be needed anymore) laptop screens and monitors (as well as proper 3-D applications) seem as rare as hens teeth.

Now while 3-D experience at a movie theatre is on the whole a disappointing experience --probably due to most of the available films being shown are IMO a load of JUNK - at home on your own computer in comfortable surroundings this could turn out to be a much more pleasant exercise.

Current Browser technology also seems to have NO indication of when it might build in 3-D support for media playing or streaming either.

I'm sure the Movie industry would do much better testing this stuff out on an Internet streaming platform than virtually KILLING the whole technology with Rubbish movies that turns people off the whole idea.

However the Movie industry still doesn't understand decent technology -- if it weren't for some "dubious sites" we'd probably still be watching movies in 16mm FILM !! or putting up with DVD's riddled with totally BOVINE DRM.

I'd love to be able to have REAL 3-D representation of CAD drawings --REAL 3-D not "exploded 3-D views" displayed on a 2-D screen as well as 3-D photos via photoshop etc and can think of loads of others -- sports for example make good 3-D viewing.

Cheers
jimbo

Interesting idea about 3D CAD and Photoshop.

I've never seen a 3D movie. I've put them silly glasses on in PC World and had a look at the TV's. I was once tempted to buy one but then opted out. I've never found it to be true 3D, and various parts of background images are unidentifiable or distorted. Or, maybe my eyes are just messed up. Didn't cut it for me though.

I think a contributing factor of the downfall of 3D movie industry is the cost of production, and the limited niche. Not everyone has 3D TV's and those that do are not necessarily going to buy their movie. So I feel it's based on whether the production of a 3D home movie is viable and profitable.

And this would be similar to 3D computer devices. Someone creating 3D images for whatever reason in Photoshop is limiting their audience because only a small handful will be able to view. CAD is a real use that I would actually think could work, but again this would only be useful for the company, and the clients. If you create a true 3D render, you'd have to have your client have a 3D device, or have them come to your office to view.

But, it all appeals to a limited audience. The companies developing these devices need to profit, and at this moment in time I can't see it happening. I think 3D technology is a little too primitive at the moment.

Now, if Google can get their glasses to take off, and include invisible 3D lenses that can be switched on and off (or automatically when a 3D image or video is being viewed), then maybe they can help boost the popularity of 3D devices.

I think at some point there will be an increase in demand and production of 3D devices, but not just yet. That's my personal opinion though.

As for touch, I have a touch desktop PC. It's not all that it's cracked up to be. I find it a pain to use YouTube with touch. Websites need to be optimized for touch screen desktops. But, it's not going to happen. Developers will not want to waste their time catering for yet another device with touch capabilities that isn't a mobile or tablet because the usage is slim, and we "desktop touch" users have mouse and keyboard. I rarely use touch, although it's useful in some cases.

You mean like in Iron Man where Stark is moving things around in 3D, that would be great.

The only 3d Tech in use for home viewing is called Half-SBS. It requires an HDTV set up to view the content. Not only does it require glasses, they have to be plugged into the HDTV, not to mention they are about a hundred bucks per pair.

I saw Into Darkness in iMax, that was the best 3D effect I had ever seen, I wonder why that kind of content can't be released onto Blu Ray? It seems it is less depended on tech than Half-SBS.

I do have a copy of Avatar in regular old fashioned Red and Blue, I can put the clip ons on and watch it, it looks great. But clearly what is needed is some kind of way to project the 3D image out into the open.

It's gonna be a long time until we have Holodeck Technology.

See, that's the problem, people who make this stuff don't consider that there are people who CANT USE it.

In your case, it would have to be a real Holodeck, with Force Fields so you can interact with the objects. Actually, Holodecks are related to Transporters, so the Holographic Objects have some kind of Matter- It just goes away when the Holodeck is shut off.

I think this is part of the problem why I can't see 3D properly. One of my eyes has poor vision, and even with glasses the improvement is not 100%.

What are the current options at the moment for 3D devices? I remember seeing TV's that used an alternative to Red and Blue.

Out of interest what does the 3DS use? I kinda like how that does 3D.

All ya wanna know about 3DS is here:

Actually - I WANT ONE!

The Nintendo 3DS is based on a custom PICA200 graphics processor from a Japanese start-up Digital Media Professionals (DMP).[SUP][132][/SUP] It has two screens; the top screen is a 3.53 in (90 mm) 5:3 3D screen with a resolution of 800×240 pixels (400×240 pixels per eye, WQVGA) that is able to produce an autostereoscopic three-dimensional effect (one without 3D glasses) using a parallax barrier display, while the bottom screen is a 3.02 in (77 mm) 4:3 non-3D resistive touch panel with a resolution of 320×240 pixels (QVGA).[SUP][133][/SUP] The 3DS weighs approximately 230 grams (8.1 oz) and, when closed, is 134 mm (5.3 in) wide, 74 mm (2.9 in) broad, and 21 mm (0.83 in) thick.[SUP][133][/SUP]

I actually had one of those, but I ended up selling it. I thought it was fairly cool ... I mean, the 3-D aspect worked, but I think it was too hard on my eyes. Plus I came to the conclusion that I just don't have much of a need for small handheld gaming devices ... I'm more into the PC and Xbox (and now OUYA).
