I was brought a Compaq GM5072 to fix about a month back. The HD was OK so I was able to grab the guys info and put it into a loaner machine I made for him. No sweat there, he needed to do his taxes, couldn't get to his invoices.

So I ordered a new Motherboard for the system, from a guy on Ebay. The replacement MBs for this thing are priced up to 300 bucks! I found one for 84 bucks, ordered it, CPU bad as well! So I ordered a new Socket 939 CPU for it. NO DICE. I bring em both down to the local Computer shop, both items tested out bad. It's too bad it was a fine fast system when it was brand new. :(

The seller never responded to my emails about it. I do have one day left to ship the MB back, a few days more for the CPU.

I've been fixing puters since 1995, and I've dealt with all kinds of hideous issues. This was one of the worst! The Bear, totally and unequivocally, ate my arse off!

I've had reasonably good luck until this. Usually I use amazon, but those boards were all 300 bucks and more.

Has anyone here used Portatech? Build your own system... Every single item customizable.. Its best to buy the extras locally in case you have to return anything, you dont have to wait for snail mail...

Built a Quad core AMD 3.4 ghz machine 5 years ago, still going strong!!

Well, this was a Gategay system, needs a special MB. I'll keep the case, see if I can find a working MB for it a bit later.

UPDATE!. Due to the silence of the guy, I opened a case at eBay. He finally responded on Friday - He's been out of town, he agreed to send me a refund. It was too bad the board and chip didn't work, the system was in a fine case. I could not use the same case for the replacement board I finally got, I HATE systems that are not standardised!

UPDATE II! The guy refunded me for both the board and the CPU! SO at least I'm not broke for the remainder of the month, I had use my own money to buy this stuff, not the customers. He only paid me 120 bucks, for a loaner system, my old eTower that had VistPuke in it, I installed 7 and I put his progs in it, so he could do his bidness. I bought that Asus A8N Mobo for his system and had to rebuild it into an old gray eTower I had, everything went right in, and his DVD drives had a curve to them so they match well. Now I just gotta get him here to pick the heap up.

Hello
For what my 2 cents are worth, EBay is so huge that when an issue arises you have no one to turn to. There are no reasonable sanctions to employ and communication can be impossible.
I learned the hard way and a mod at a well known forum told me to avoid that site. It is tempting, I must admit.

I have had no other problems there, it ended up the guy was on vacation, so he didn't get my original refund req's. But when I opened a case, he responded immediately. The moment I accepted his refund offer, the cash got dumped into my PayPal.
