Windows Phone 8 support to end in 2014

If you're shopping for a new mobe on a two year contract and like the look of a Windows Phone, chances are you'll be compelled to undergo an OS upgrade or face using a handset that's not supported by the end of your deal.

The Reg offers this advice with a tip of the hat to Italian site Plaffo, which pointed out a Microsoft support document that says Windows Phone 8 support ends in July 2014, just 16 months from now.

The document also says Windows Phone 8 is already past its “lifecycle start date”, aka the point at which Microsoft starts counting down to the end of support.

Hi there
I don't think this is a mega problem -- The phone will just update to Win 8.5 or Win 9 or whatever fairly simply -- I've done at LEAST 3 Android updates on my Galaxy IIIs --simple and doesn't take more than a minute or two with decent network connection.

I'd be VERY surprised if Ms was dropping Windows OS phone support - Nokia would surely be making noises.

What might be true is that support for the PREVIOUS version of Windows phone - the Windows 7 (or Windows 7 and a bit) version might be ending -- However those phones were always HIDEOUS as well as the handsets too.

The Windows 8 phones are selling in Europe quite well so I suggest the reporter writing the article checks the source - or as usual has simply made a perfectly AVOIDABLE mistake.

Cheers

MS did not update any of the Windows phone 7.x to 8.

Hi there
NOT the SAME ISSUE. Dropping support isn't the same as Upgrading. Even My English understands that.

Android works because the OS is such a TINY OS so upgrades aren't normally a problem - and it's Linux based too. Installing Windows 8 on a W7 phone would be quite a challenge.

If you buy Windows phones you can't expect them to be updated like Android phones -- remember the Android OS is still basically being re-written every day by Google.

This shouldn't really matter to users of these phones so long as security and applications can be installed on them.

Cheers

No and yes, this is right.

Windows Phone 7.8 is being supported until September 2014, base version of Windows Phone 8 is up until July 2014. Keep in mind there is a Blue update in the works this year for Windows Phone 8 that Nokia and HTC I believe are currently toying around with.

It's basically like with Windows 7, support for that ends sooner than Windows 7 SP1. Windows Phone 7 will end up being supported for a total of almost a good four years (shockingly long compared to android, more like ios where the iphone 3GS can get ios 6, but not the total feature set, you need an iphone 4S for that) Windows Phone 8.5 (Blue) will most likely be supported until like 2015. Microsoft declared that that OEMs will have to support their handsets for at least 18 months after release date. They will support the software aspect at each upgrade notch.

Also, Windows Phone 8 handsets are guaranteed Windows Phone 9 as there aren't hardware issues in the way. The reason why 8 didn't get ported over to Windows Phone 7 handsets is simply because of hardware impediments and lack thereof. Windows Phone 8 requires Secure Boot I believe and Bitlocker encryption (to prevent custom ROM hacking and pirating of apps through sideloading), 7 handsets don't even remotely have anything like that. It needs a dual core processor, although I can't think why as Windows Phone itself isn't a dog like android, version 7 can run on an 800MHz processor, 256 MBs of RAM, and just 4 gigs of storage; 7 handsets don't have that. It's hardware issues that prevented that, you wouldn't install vista on an older xp machine nor would you go through the hassle of making that happen, you'd just get a new PC.

That's all well and fine, but will it be a free upgrade..?? If not, it's gonna be a tough task to beat the android sets...
