How to get back to normality

Start8 is what I use. Stardock is about 1 mile away from where I work. It's made me much happier on my Windows 8 machine.

My question was - why could MS not provide that option. Everybody (or at least most) would have been happy. Now we all have the feeling that they want to ram this playmobile UI down our throat.

WHS,

I agree 100% with that comment. MS typically provides the new way, and the ability to also use the old way. Leaving the old way off this release was a real dumb move. You didn't have to make it the default, and you didn't even have to make it obvious to turn on, just include it for those who truly do want it. Having to resort to third parties is just crappy if you ask me.

That is what they want(ed) to do.

I think they may realise it isn't the best way forward for them.

They can turn it around completely - without much difficulty - it woud be a PR gift. I think they might.

The easy way would be to buy the code from that OEM and integrate it into the system. I bet that would cost them less than the fine they just had to pay the EU for being stubburn.

I don't think MS would have any difficulty doing the coding. They just chose not to.

Seems like a start menu and Start Screen would be redundancies.

Well, they are to some extent. Just as it's redundant to be able to open the start screen with the windows key, by going to the lower left corner and by pulling up the charms bar.

Having a start menu for me
1). provides consistency to every other Windows desktop I use
2). allows me to launch non-frequently used apps, without leaving the classic desktop and potentially missing notifications from Outlook or Microsoft Lync.

I know you will hate this, but I have configured Start8 to put me right onto the "classic desktop" at boot time. Because I spend 99.9% of my time there, I don't want to see the Start Screen when I first log into my machine. The first things I need to see are Outlook 2010 and Lync 2013.

MS have a problem.

Win 8 is selling badly.

They need to get people onto it (or blue ) - so they can get them into their online /subscription/etc schemes.

I don't want to see the Start Screen when I first log into my machine

I believe that it's just plain stubborn pride. MS is sayingthis is the way we intended it to be and that's the way it's going to stay; noone is going to have the audacity to tell Microsoft that perhaps it could havebeen done in a better way.

I am not so sure whether there is 'pride' at the top levels of MS. At lower levels, people are proud of the work they do and rightfully so. But at the CEO and the next level, the guys often don't even understand the intricacies of their products. They run the company purely by the financial numbers. And when it hurts in that department, they will swiftly order a different direction.

I am sure there are many 'task forces' going on right now to figure out what should be done to get the ship back on track. They will report back to the board with a variety of options and then MS management will pick and move. These things don't happen over night. So we have to be patient.
