Hi there
Another one for Ms haters who also think it has lost its way.
The British film PULP premiers today on Xbox without going to the cinema -- Ms has captured this - and I suspect hugely increasing market and although I'm no Xbox user there are millions of Xbox users around the globe.

Another one for Ms to "Sock it" to The Fruit Company who could have done similar but never got Apple TV off the ground

Xbox 360 gets its first exclusive movie release, 'Pulp' | The Verge

Cheers

Umm, sure,ok.

Maybe I'm one of those dumb Apple guys. What exactly did MS do here that is commendable?

Apple TV is a single device and it isn't very popular or relevant. It has been eclipsed by iPads and iPhones and really all it needs to be anymore is just an Airplay box. That's all I use mine for is basically and HDMI connection to my TV that I can stream to from all Apple devices.

What did make it off the ground is a little media distribution store they call iTunes. It has had a bit of success recently.

The relevance here is that it's been found that a LOT of Xbox users use their Xboxes more for video and other media playback other than just gaming. This means Netflix, Hulu, Windows Media Center streaming, SmartGlass, and such. So Microsoft is being the clever capitalists that they are and filling in a gap that apple obviously can't fill EVER, but getting more video content in the past year or so to be available on the Xbox Video Marketplace. There is more chance for the Xbox TV than apple TV simply because the Xbox has much more exposure to be popular and useful. apple already has an iffy TV device and yet people are hyping apple releasing something with TV sometime soon without realizing they already have an iffy product out there that isn't doing much.

There is also a rumor/speculation that Microsoft will straight up release an Xbox TV product, not an actual Xbox, but an Xbox cable box per se; sometime with the new Xbox release. Cost effective, brand recognition, original content, and good third party content. It's already at a pretty good start for that and it's commendable on Microsoft's behalf to take advantage of the platform other than gaming, like political debates. For the first time, we were able to see what a general audience felt about the past presidential debates as people could use the their Xboxes to show how they thought about a candidate in real time.

LOT of things are possible with the Xbox that apple TV can't do.

OH, speaking of itunes... The one dilemma apple faces in getting content on apple TV is quite frankly, cable companies. They're not going to pass content from their services to apple just because. Movie studios aren't going to hand apple tons of content pretty quickly. The only bet is that if itunes is taken to a subscription based model to stream what is already on there, but then again, why do that when you can do airplay with an ipad...

I'm not sure that Apple TV never got off the ground. It's pretty decent for what it is. It's just a little box to turn a non smart TV into a smart TV box.

If Apple were to get a movie in the iTunes store before a theater, than it would be viewable on an Apple TV device.

I recently was in the market for a little streaming smart box for my bedroom, and I considered the Apple TV, but Roku was about 1/2 the price and had HBO GO.

But MS getting a movie pre-theater is definitely a boon to their business overall. It's like their game exclusives, like CoD map packs and such a month before other platforms...and support for HBO GO, which is STILL missing from the PS3 (even though we have been told for a long time that "it's coming").

Honestly? I won't be happy until buying movies online is just as convenient as torrenting used to be, and I have access to the same huge selection.

I never felt torrenting was all that easy. Various codec issues, malware concerns, etc.

Shark007 codec pack, choose torrents with high seeder counts, and delete anything that you don't recognize or requires a codec that Shark007 doesn't have. Providing you don't go to some random torrent site that literally screams "suspicious", your chances of getting malware is fairly slim.
