    Apple's own computers hacked

This is an interesting antidote to the "I have an Apple so I don't have to worry about malware" mindset:

    Apple computers 'hacked' in breach

Apple has said its computers were attacked by the same hackers who targeted Facebook...

Only a few. Since OS X Lion Apple no longer uses Java. OS X Mountain Lion is not having this problem.

Yeah, as a Microsoft user I still wouldn't run around rubbing this in the face of Apple fans. Historically they have been able to live quite easily without having to worry about malware at all. The track record is certainly in their favor.

Yes I agree that Apple users are probably still slightly safer.

The balance is shifting though- that historic advantage breeds complacency in Apple users and I think malware writers are starting to look their way more often.

Also, (although I love and hate different parts of Windows 8 in equal measure) I think it's a very good thing that Windows 8 now has anti-virus software installed by default as part of the software. Defender may not be perfect, and there are probably better free products out there, but having something there by default which the non-techie user doesn't have to switch on can only be a good thing.
