I'm back and ready to begin dual-booting, after settling in with my new computers. :)
Spent a lot of time with family and want to see you guys back at Eight Forums. All of my PC's are up and running with a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro with Media Center. Now, I am considering a dual-boot, but with what OS?
Doing it for the fun of it really, always nice to play around with another operating system.

Nice to see you guys again. :geek:

Unless you have a really weak PC, I would suggest running the other OS's inside of a virtual machine rather than screwing around with dual booting.

Since all of the versions of Windows are more or less the same, try a Linux distro or something if you are looking for a challenge. Mint linux is a good place to start. I've got tons of experience with CentOS (which is a Red Hat Enterprise Linux clone)...so I can provide guidance and assistance if you need it on this.

VM's are an excellent way to investigate alternate O/S technology. Completely safe way to see how things work with absolute-zero impact on your primary system. Have used these for years.

Welcome Back, TheGrantFitz!
For dual boot, if you have a strong system VM is the best option.
For weaker system go dual boot with Linux distro's

Try Zorin - I have a lot of fun with it in a virtual machine. Mine is even on an external disk.

Having fun with Zorin - Windows 7 Forums

Portable OS - Carry your OS on an External Drive - Windows 7 Forums

And this excellent tutorial by Shawn will help you set it up (the Zorin method is the same): http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2899-vmware-player-install-windows-8-a.html

See the extra thing I mentioned about the VM tools install:

Thanks all! I have 8 VMs, a good mix of 98, XP, Vista, 7, 8, Ubuntu, Elementary OS, and Chromium OS. It isn't the same, if you know what I mean. :)
Anyone want a signature?

Let me take a guess... it's installed and running but you don't feel the real deal, dual-boot risks, where some boot entry's will mess others. :) But if you have UEFI and even without it: a Win8 hybrid boot will make multi-boots worse than expected.

I wanted to test Zorin OS but it's Ubuntu based and UEFI (my Win8 SecureBoot as well) wouldn't allow the dual-boot form what I read around here. A VM is what works very well.

I also got the Win98 and ME to my list. ;)

Welcome back! I tried dual-booting but had many, many problems, so I installed Win8 on my main PC for awhile. I went back to Win7 on my main PC, which is soon to be upgraded (subject of a separate thread) and I'll run Win8 on my test PC.
