i'm on a Mission from God - Pronounce ISO and GUI Right!

I'm in my 40's. I remember when the first home computer systems came out and used many of them over the years. The Timex Sinclair, The Texas Instruments Ti-99. Radio Shack/Tandy Color Computers, Model 1,2,3 - Commodore C64, Vic 20, Atari 400, 800, 1600XL. I remember the first modems, the first tape backup drives, floppy drives, first hard drives, first graphical interfaces. I was around and involved with all of it and I know how these product terms are originally meant to be pronounced.

When ISO's and GUI came out these were acronyms for their real longer counterparts ISO = International Standards Organization and the GUI stands for Graphical User Interface.

In acronym form these are pronounced by the letters of the alphabet - Say the letters with me -

I (eye) - S (Ess) O (Oh)

G (gee) - U (you) I (eye)

These are the official and correct way to pronounce these terms. I see people pronouncing ISO as Eyeso and GUI as Gooy. I see " professionals" in the computer world saying these ridiculous childish terms and it really boils my butt with a flame 4 feet high.

Trying to study the origins of where these *******ized slang terms came from gets you nowhere - no one even the mighty Google seems to know. I have read kids in their 20's and 30's say they have heard Gooy and Eyeso all their lives. Older folks usually pronounce these terms correctly so these slang expressions had to have been invented sometime in the 90's way after the beginnings of personal computing and the first CD drives came about (mid 70's to mid 80's) In fact the ISO (International Standards Organization) has been around since 1947 and it is this that the now famous Cd format standard was named after circa 1986-1988. ( although Cd drives didn't become mainstream until the mid 90's) International Organization for Standardization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and ISO 9660 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What we have now is whole generations of people mispronouncing these terms - and thinking that it is acceptable - It's Not. I say Stop It. Stop it right Now! No wonder the youth of today is bad in History when stupid people keep re-writing it based on non facts. Yes, it may be cute to say these slang terms but continuing to propagate the myth is more damaging in the long term. Educate your kids right. Teach them how to pronounce these terms properly. If your an adult using these terms, stop now and show your willing to step above the silly uneducated crowd.

Interesting article you've wrote, Dark Rider. I must confess, I did know how to pronounce GUI. But I do say eeso instead of ISO. Although I did know it stands for the International Standards Organisation and it excisted since just after WO2.

And for your records....I'm in my 30's ;)

I think GUI (gooey) is a decent way to pronounce it, it takes more effort to pronounce each letter than to say "gooey". I don't see how this is "slang".

Also, with all due respect (and professionalism yadda yadda)...
"You're" is short for "you are". As in you're kind (you are kind).
"Your" is possessive. As in "your" car, "your" mind and, "your" life.

The more you knooow! :geek:

That's just how fundamentalism works.. God gives you a mission then fails to correct your spelling mistakes. Either that or I was distracted by The Blues Brothers.

Gooy and eyeso is indeed slang. They are user made up terms that replace the proper terms. Trouble is since these terms caught on like wildfire.. probably by people using them who didn't know any better, they became accepted slang to the uneducated masses. When I watch a video by a PC professional and they say these words I wanna stop the video, reach in and slap them. If someone corrects me when I say them properly because they would rather me use the slang, I wanna slap them double. I'm not going to take a poll on which versions people would rather use because people will stick to what they have been indoctrinated with - the slang. I fear the correct use, origins and understanding of the proper terms is going to to lost forever as more and more people use the incorrect slang. Just because everybody does it, doesn't make it right.

Well, everyone has preferences I guess. As long as I know what people mean I'm fine with it. I'm not going to criticize others because I think they should appear "professional" when they simply want to get their meaning across.

The way I see it, there are no "definite" things in this plane of existence, only how we interpret them.

Best of luck to you, I'm nearly 40 and a computer professional and I say them both wrong. I also say (skuzzi) for SCSI. I do however pronounce gnome properly.

My book for one of my classes mentions the pronunciation for GUI as gooey and SCSI as (skuzzi).

Well, I've been a software developer since 1976 and I've never thought that it was wrong to use "slang" for acronyms. Sorry ... but (no offense) the OP is wrong about GUI (gooey) pronunciation being "wrong". All of us professional developers use that pronunciation. If you're in the industry long enough you'll find that developers consider you a novice if you are still calling a GUI a Gee-You-Eye.

In likewise fashion:

SQL = Sequel - not Ess-Que-Ell
SCSI = Scuzzy - not Ess-See-Ess-Eye
TWAIN = Twain - not Tee-DoubleYou-A-Eye-En

BTW ... speaking of trivia (which this topic certainly is) does anybody know what the acronym TWAIN actually stands for? Any other oldies like me know this one? Will tell you later if no one guesses it (and NO Googling for this contest).

-Max ;-)

TWAIN is a good one, but not very interesting. It's like GNU.

I was going to stay out of this one, but I then decided to put my two cents worth in--or should I say $.02 worth or 2 cents worth. I'm not sure how you think it should be said but here's my main point. You seem to be deeply concerned that a whole generation of people are mispronouncing computer terms incorrectly. Allow me to tell you a bigger problem about this whole generation--something more important than mispronouncing computer terms incorrectly.What is the problem? Or should I say what are the problems? How about so many people living in poverty--people who want to work to earn a living but can't find a job. How about so many children who are not receiving the proper care, guidance and love from their parents? How about all the children who seldom see their parents--if at all? How about all the people who are suffering from illness.How about all the homeless people in this world? How about all the wars--countries fighting each other--people killing each other? How about someone walking into a school and randomly killing a bunch of little children? I could go on and onwhich makes the problem you talk about which seems so big to you very insignificant.
You said that you have an assignment from God? That's good.Try and tackle some of the problems I mentioned. By the way, you say thatyou're in your 40s? I've been around for a while, too. I'm 81--almost twice your age.

I think, and I hope, OP was joking about a "mission from 'god'".

In IT, depending on where one will end up, the average "user" will probably not be familiar with these terms. Many don't even know what to call a desktop computer.

It was a funny line from one of my favorite movies, The Blues Brothers, and I thought I'd borrow it for kicks. I'm not that much of a zealot. I could have thrown in some Mystery Science Theater 3000 quips but I fear references to The Puma Man and Zap Rousdower would have gone over everyone's head.
