I'm in my 40's. I remember when the first home computer systems came out and used many of them over the years. The Timex Sinclair, The Texas Instruments Ti-99. Radio Shack/Tandy Color Computers, Model 1,2,3 - Commodore C64, Vic 20, Atari 400, 800, 1600XL. I remember the first modems, the first tape backup drives, floppy drives, first hard drives, first graphical interfaces. I was around and involved with all of it and I know how these product terms are originally meant to be pronounced.
When ISO's and GUI came out these were acronyms for their real longer counterparts ISO = International Standards Organization and the GUI stands for Graphical User Interface.
In acronym form these are pronounced by the letters of the alphabet - Say the letters with me -
I (eye) - S (Ess) O (Oh)
G (gee) - U (you) I (eye)
These are the official and correct way to pronounce these terms. I see people pronouncing ISO as Eyeso and GUI as Gooy. I see " professionals" in the computer world saying these ridiculous childish terms and it really boils my butt with a flame 4 feet high.
Trying to study the origins of where these *******ized slang terms came from gets you nowhere - no one even the mighty Google seems to know. I have read kids in their 20's and 30's say they have heard Gooy and Eyeso all their lives. Older folks usually pronounce these terms correctly so these slang expressions had to have been invented sometime in the 90's way after the beginnings of personal computing and the first CD drives came about (mid 70's to mid 80's) In fact the ISO (International Standards Organization) has been around since 1947 and it is this that the now famous Cd format standard was named after circa 1986-1988. ( although Cd drives didn't become mainstream until the mid 90's) International Organization for Standardization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and ISO 9660 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
What we have now is whole generations of people mispronouncing these terms - and thinking that it is acceptable - It's Not. I say Stop It. Stop it right Now! No wonder the youth of today is bad in History when stupid people keep re-writing it based on non facts. Yes, it may be cute to say these slang terms but continuing to propagate the myth is more damaging in the long term. Educate your kids right. Teach them how to pronounce these terms properly. If your an adult using these terms, stop now and show your willing to step above the silly uneducated crowd.
