Hi, I just installed Windows 8 PRO with a genius key today. Things went fine untill I started to install some programs and drivers. Then it just gets freeze after a short while, like 10-15 mins. And when it freezes, the mouse pointer is gone as well :| I cant type or change to anything by keyboard.

Im using laptop Dell Studio XPS 1340.

Anyone has any suggestion to fix this? I've searched but cant find any solutions.

Thanks in advanced!

A "genius key"? o_O

Where did you get the iso?

I got it from TechNet.

Here is the screenshot

I tried to change to "Best for Performance" which reduces all the effect and visual things. Now my laptop runs longer but still freezes after a longer while :( Just updated to newest driver for graphic card from Windows Update also. But seems not to fix the problem :(

Ok, just wanted to make sure it wasn't a hacked ISO off the net or somthing since they can just behave in any crazy way...

Well unfortunately it may be due to a driver you previously installed :(

You might be able to go back to a restore point before you noticed it happening (if one exists) or maybe start over with a fresh install but be careful of what drivers you install (and use the machine for a day between each suspicious one). That way you might be able to track down which one is doing it...

Another idea might be to disable unnecessary hardware one by one and see if it happens to go away. Though there aren't TOO many things you can disable and still use the machine, but audio is one, special laptop devices like the track pad etc may be others...

Thank you FSeal. Im also using this laptop to posting this and I have to force restart (holding down the power button to turn off, then on) when it freezes so you know how frustrated I am right now.

The attachment is my laptop info, got all using W8 Log Collector. Please have a look to see if any driver could messed up. Most of the drivers are installed automatically by Windows 8. I just manually installed one for touchpad. I thought it was the one but I unstalled it, it didnt fix. And I decided to install graphic driver and update to the newest by WIndows Update. But right now, it still gets freezes after a longer while like I said when reduced all visual effects. Windows installed these drivers by itself, how could them mess my comp up? :(

Now Im really stuckkk!! :(

Hmm, not too much to go on I'm afraid :/ There have been a lot of reports of freezing on the forum here though, try doing a thread search and see if anything applies.

One shot in the dark... I assume that the laptop has a regular hard drive (not an SSD)? And when the lock-up occurs, is the HD light lit solid on?

No, it's totally off, not even a little flash.

And wait a minute, I just uninstalled Chrome. And now my lappy working longer without freezes. Im testing more time to see if it happens again. But why Chrome, cuz I installed the newest beta version 22.0.1229.8 Dev which support Retro version and Desktop version and it should be compatible 100%, right? :|

After some hours, the comp crashed again. One thing is that if I just leave it there and do nothing, it wont get crashed :( It only crash while Im doing something.

------

So I just did a fresh, a new function of Windows I think. It got everything back to the new state, except my files and my ID and uninstalls all desktop apps, still keep WIndows Marketplace app. Things seem running fine. Im testing more to see if I gets any crash. If no, then the problem can be caused by one of the desktop apps which I didn't install so many.

These are apps that got removed:

So till now, I can be quite confident to say Synaptics Driver for my Dell touchpad, Chrome and Skype cause the freeze :(

Nice one! :) I stumbled across this fix while browsing a mac forum (of all places) because I had installed win8 on a mac mini with boot camp and was seeing the same freezing thing. I've been freeze-free for a couple of days now (previous best was circa 1hour) so I thought I would spread the love.

Like others (in other threads) I suspected chrome and Dropbox at first, but that's probably because they are the first two apps everyone installs.

Glad you are sorted.
