Black Screen

Hello, first post here and hopefully you can help get this solved. Hopefully this is posted in the correct location so if it's not, mods please move it.

I built my computer months ago and it's been running great with no issues. Recently, it went to black screen after waking from sleep and it ran some type of auto-repair with no success. I have Update set to manual so it wasn't updating anything and I hadn't run it for a few weeks. I'm not overclocking at the moment. The screen is black with no curser. I'm able to turn on Narrator and it seems everything is running normally, I just can't see anything. I can tab through menus and such with Narrator and then shut down. While booting I see the Windows logo with the spinning circles briefly and then it goes black. I'm able to bring up the UEFI screen and everything appears fine but as soon as I exit it does the same thing.

After trying a few things with no success, I've ended up reinstalling Windows but a few items in Device Manager have issues. One of which is the Ethernet Controller so it has no network connection after setup. Soon after updating the driver from the motherboard disc, it plays a tone I'd never heard before and then goes black. I've installed Windows several times and each time it goes black soon after updating that driver. I searched for that tone and it seems to be related to Hardware Connect. Once I left the computer running for an hour and a half before updating drivers and it ran fine. I can run programs like calculator, Paint, scan with Windows Defender, etc. but as soon as I update that driver, I get the tone and then black screen.

I've also tested running it with only one stick of RAM (in the proper slot as stated in the manual) and then reseated both sticks with no change.

At first I thought something glitched in Windows but a format and reinstall doesn't solve it so now I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue? I don't have any spare parts compatible with this rig though so I'd have to take it to a shop or buy something. Any and all help is appreciated.

Which driver and version are you installing from the CD.
You need the Intel(R) Gigabit Ethernet Driver V19.1.51.0 for Windows 7/8/8.1 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)
According the info on Asus your motherboard is Windows 10 Ready, are you not incidentely installing the windows 10 drivers Intel Lan Driver V20.1.2019.0 for Win 10 (WHQL) .

Thanks for the reply.

In device manager, I click to find the driver from the CD/DVD drive in the folder marked "drivers" and it just finds it automatically. When I get home from work later today, I'll check to see what's updating and post results here.

I downloaded and saved to a USB stick, file V19.1.51.0 from the Asus web site support page for my motherboard. I then reinstalled Windows and clicked Autorun in the downloaded file. It installed and I was able to get on the web for a few minutes but it did go to black screen again. What can I do now?

Was previously the windows 10 version installed, before reinstalling and installing the windows 8.1 driver version
If Yes, than the system may have installed more windows 10 driver versions from the motherboard CD
And another (faulty)driver may crash the system.
Do you have more exlamation marks in your Device Manager.
Look at the driverversions and compare them with Windows 8.1 drivers versions on the Asus website.

I can't see anything so I have no idea what driver was previously installed. The only way I can update the driver is to reinstall Windows because shortly after I update the network driver it goes to black screen. Within 10 minutes or so. I format before I install Windows so it's clean.

Yes, I have more exclamation marks. PCI Simple Comm, SM Bus Controller, Unknown device, and High Def Audio, although there is already one High Def Audio that is fine.

I had a thought this morning that I think may be good to try. When I install Windows I tell it not to automatically run Windows Update because I like to do that manually. However, I don't change the auto update for apps and such. I think I'll reinstall tonight and select all of those to manual and see what happens. I suspect once the network is connected, it's auto updating something and once it does, I get that tone and then immediately black screen. I feel silly for not thinking of that previously but sometimes I get an epiphany while taking a hot shower LoL.

Asus recommends a certain sequence of installing the driver in their fac.
FAQ
Is there any suggestion procedure to install the drivers?[h=3]The installation sequence of the drivers is important for the system efficiency.[/h] It is recommended to install the driver for the motherboard chipset first.

You can refer to the suggestion sequence below:
1. Operation System.
2. The driver for the motherboard chipset.
3. Other drivers(such as Audio, LAN, Graphic).
4. The latest service pack for the Operation System.

Also look on the motherboard driver Cd if you have the possibility to install only windows 8.1 drivers

I installed Windows again and this time I did not install the network driver but instead worked on the other drivers and utilities from the motherboard CD. While the graphics driver was installing, it went to black screen. So I'm looking at the ASUS web site to find a good driver, and they list three. 10.18.14.4206, 10.18.10.3910, and 10.18.14.3496 as listed here Z97-AR | Motherboards | ASUS USA after selecting Win 8.1 and then under VGA.

I don't get it. This is the exact same hardware when I build this back in April and it set up and ran flawlessly since then up until now with the same Windows and ASUS mobo discs. I don't think Win 10 was introduced yet. This last time it wasn't even connecting to the internet to update anything.

I do appreciate your help and patience with me on this until we get it solved.

What is vga driver version on the Cd, is it compatible with windows 8.1.
I would install the latest windows 8.1 (64bit) version10.18.14.4206 from the website.

And i would wait with installing the utullities untill your system is stable .

Okay, so I reinstalled Windows but this time set nothing to auto update. I updated all drivers except for the graphics driver and then ran Windows Update and updated everything except for the one below. It's running fine. The funny thing is Device Manager never showed an issue with graphics but every time I update the graphics driver, it goes black screen. What do you think?

The driver above did you get this one through Windows update. This one is probably a "standard" Intel driver.
I suspect that with your motherboard you need the latest "costumized" Intel driver Version 10.18.14.4206 from the Asus website.

Have you at the moment installed any driver for your Intel HD 4600.

Could you make screenshot of your Device manager and put it up.

That driver is copy/pasted from the Windows Update screen. I ran every update except for that one. No, I have not installed any drivers because when I install them from the motherboard disc which should be correct, it goes black screen.

On a previous attempt to fix this, I installed that driver 10.18.14.4206 from the Asus web site but it also went black screen.

Your Device manager is now showing the Microsoft Basic Display Driver, that means that it could not identify or find your Intell HD 460.
On the previous installment did it also showed this Basic driver or the Intel HD 4600.

The normal way in this situation would now to install the latest driver from the website which you have on your USB by opening Update Driver search on this computer and go to your USB and installl the driver.
But after so many attemps.!
That's why i asked if you earlier had also the Basic driver.

Yes, each time (other than the original build) it showed the Basic Display Driver after installation and goes to black screen any time I try to update it including HD 4600 on the Mobo disc.

Is it possible it's actually a hardware issue and the motherboard is at fault?

Yes i also think it is likely could be hardware problem after all that we tried.
Like you said a problem with your motherboard or the GPU of your CPU is broken.

Did you try again to update the latest driver from the Asus site like i suggested in my last post. If yes and did it crashed again.
The only driver we did not tried is the latest driver from Intel itself. download here https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...aphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-15-36-28-4332-

Did you have discret external GPU like Geforce or a Radeon videocard before.
Did you change anything in the UEFI.
Could you check how the settings are for how to detect a Gpu in your uefi

No, I did not try the driver from the Asus site as I had already attempted that at least once, possibly twice without good results.

I will attempt the driver from the Intel link you provided if you think it will help and the settings below are okay. I could change the Primary Display from Auto to CPU Graphics to force that setting if you think for some reason that's what's causing the issue when I update the driver?

No, I have not installed a discrete graphics card yet.

I did not change anything in UEFI. At one time early on when nothing was working I did reset it to optimum defaults in case something had changed causing the issue. It made no difference.

From the UEFI Graphics Configuration:
IGFX VBIOS Version 1029
iGPU Frequency 700MHz
Primary Display = Auto
DVMT Pre-Allocated for Haswell = Auto
Render Standby = Auto
CPU Graphics Multi-Monitor = Disabled

I could change the Primary Display from Auto to CPU Graphics to force that setting if you think for some reason that's what's causing the issue when I update the driver?
I think setting it to cpu graphics is worth a try, maybe the auto setting does not recognize the Intel HD 4600 somehow.
Set it to CPU graphics, save it. Reboot. Check Device Manager if Display Adapters is changed to HD 4600.
If Recognized as HD 4600 then 1. install latest driver asus website 2. if this doesn't work install the latest Intel driver.

Also you could update to the latest Bios version 2801 and see if this solves it.
