Ok I need your help.
My roommate has decided to install iatkos on my computer and messed up windows. I could handle fixing it if that was all, but then he decided to fix it himself and in the process deleted neccessary stuff.
Now, when I start up the computer, it opens windows recovery environment and says that config files are missing or invalid.
Specifically \boot\bcd
And it fails to see install USB when I plug it in. It can't boot from USB. So, what do I do? If I managed to boot from USB I could install Windows over iatkos partition, if it's possible to fix boot files of original. I can't install new over opd ones. That's not an option.

shift F10 in the recovery environment gives you a command prompt - try the following

  • bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
  • c:
  • cd boot
  • attrib bcd -s -h -r
  • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
  • bootrec /RebuildBcd
  • bootrec /FixMbr
  • bootrec [h=4]/FixBoot

    BCDBoot c:\windows /s c:

If you get to boot after that, run SFC/scannow from an elevated prompt to repair any system files that may be damaged[/h]

Perhaps clearing the CMOS will re-enable the USB storage functions -from manual p18:

11) CLR_CMOS (Clearing CMOS Jumper)
Use this jumper to clear the CMOS values (e.g. date information and BIOS configurations) and reset
the CMOS values to factory defaults. To clear the CMOS values, place a jumper cap on the two pins to
temporarily short the two pins or use a metal object like a screwdriver to touch the two pins for a few
seconds.
Open: Normal
Short: Clear CMOS Values
• Always turn off your computer and unplug the power cord from the power outlet before clearing the CMOS values.
• After clearing the CMOS values and before turning on your computer, be sure to remove the
jumper cap from the jumper. Failure to do so may cause damage to the motherboard.
• After system restart, go to BIOS Setup to load factory defaults (select Load Optimized
Defaults) or manually configure the BIOS settings (refer to Chapter 2, "BIOS Setup," for BIOS configurations)

Can it be done without messing with motherboard itself? I'm not so confident working with hardware...

One other point that occurs to me - is the bootable USB OK?

I have had Windows Repair wipe the ability to boot on a Mulltiboot USB thumbdrive.

Clearing the CMOS does mean opening up the system box, I am afraid.

Other alternatives - Windows 7 setup DVD, and use the recovery environment from that?

Since this is he only computer I have, I can't test usb, but it is detected by iatkos. And it's the same when I boot windows and usb.

If I could theoretically make iatkos work, could I put win8 again to usb in macintosh? Maybe I could fix it then...

I have no experience with Macintosh for about 10 years, so cannot comment on this.

Now I have another question. I can boot Windows through iatkos cd, but when i boot up the computer normally, it stops working after it says Verifying DMI pool data........
Do you know how could I fix that?

Boot your windows thru the Iatkos CD, then from an elevated command prompt

  • bootrec /RebuildBcd
  • bootrec /FixMbr
  • bootrec /FixBoot

    BCDBoot c:\windows /s c:

If you get to boot after that, run SFC/scannow from an elevated prompt to repair any system files that may be damaged

My fault - bootrec is only in the recovery environment - try the:

bcdboot c:\windows /s c:

this should add the boot folder, BCD, and boot files to the c: drive

then again, you need to make the c:\ drive active:

diskmgmt.msc

brings up the graphical disk management console

Right click on the c: drive and make it the active partition

I've shut down the computer over night and now when I boot system reserved i get startup repair, but can't run auto repair, or open cmd, or restore, or anything, because I must log into Windows first. And I can't log into Windows!

What I assume is that you can only boot using the bootable iatkos CD - and it allows you to boot into your hard disk partitions System Reserved and c:

Now booting into System Reserved brings up startup repair. You cannot log in as built in administrator? (user administrator, no password)?
