Laptop details:
Lenovo z500; Intel (R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20 GHz; RAM - 6 GB; NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M

I have been having this issue since January. I started getting an error "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered - Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version xxx.xx stopped responding and has successfully recovered"View attachment 66311 This would eventually lead onto a BSOD - VIDEO TDR FAILURE (nvlddmkm.sys). I had windows 8.1 when this issue started. This would always occur when some graphic stress was placed on the laptop. Tried installing new graphic card drivers, clean installation of new drivers. I just worked around this by disabling my graphic card, and just used my laptop, as I couldn't let my laptop keep crashing (laptop needed for uni work). Sometimes after a bsod, my laptop wouldn't even turn on, it would just get another bsod (sometimes also got a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION) and would just keep rebooting. The only way I could work around this was to start it in safe mode and disable the graphic card.

Then when the update to Win 10 came out, I updated it. Thought maybe installing win 10 would solve this problem, but it didn't. Same problem still persisted. Now I have inserted a new hard disk and have done a clean installation of windows. First I did a clean installation of windows 10, same problem. Then I did a clean installation of windows 8.1 (on the new hard drive). Still the issue persists, even though the graphic card driver reverted back to the original one that came with my laptop when I bought it. Tried doing a clean installation of the latest driver, no help. My laptop is currently on windows 8.1 on the new hard drive. Have attached the zip file of bsod dump.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you need more clarification or information.

Thanks!

EDIT - Not sure if I should post this in Windows 10 bsod or windows 8.1 bsod. Will do in both.

Hi. Tried it out. Ran the Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode, uninstalled everything. Then downloaded the latest driver from NVIDIA, half way through installing the new driver, got a WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD. Next time I tried to turn on my laptop, doesn't turn back on. Logged in via safe mode, and realised that the NVIDIA Driver was installed (even though i got a BSOD halfway through installation). Collected a bsod dump. I am sending this message via safe mode (also got the bsod dump in safe mode). Might try next to disable graphic card driver, and restart laptop (hopefully will boot then).

Any more suggestions?

So my laptop rebooted after disabling the graphic card driver in safe mode. Do you want me to run this test with a graphic card driver? If so, which one?

Yes, I can't right now see what GPU's you have, but Nvidia GPU if there is 1 of Nvidia.

If I try to install new drivers, It almost always doesn't seem to install successfully. It either just stops forever while installing, or if it installs I have problems trying to boot my laptop.

I will try to install the driver via safe mode and try this out.

Will let you know.

I tried doing the test with the latest NVIDIA driver i could find from the website. Couldn't even get the application to open. As soon as i clicked on the application to open it, my display driver crashed and as expected BSOD. Tried this twice, same result (couldn't even open Furmark) Have uploaded the BSOD dumps. BSOD dump 3 is after first attempt; BSOD dump 4 is after the second attempt.

Any more suggestions?

Please try following:

  • Open an admin command prompt
  • Copy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enter
  • When it finished reboot your system
  • Open again an admin command prompt
  • Enter sfc/scannow again

If sfc/scannow does NOT say "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation" after the second SFC, please upload the cbs.log file located at {windows partition}\Windows\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
