BSOD - Dell Precision M6600 - DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

Hello guys,
I get a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE exception on my laptop. It happens under some conditions only.
When I do my regular work like running virtual machines, etc. I don't have any problems. However, when I run a game (StarCraft 2), after a short period of time the game slows down and what I can see in the task manager is a System process that consumes 20% of my processor's resources (process explorer shows that ntoskrnl.exe!IoGetAttachedDevice thread is doing something). The only thing I can do is to restart/shutdown the system (Windows 8.1 Pro) and this is when I get the BSOD.

I already updated most of the drivers but it did not really help much.
I would really appreciate if someone could help me to find the root cause of the exception.

Hi michalrz,

Welcome to the 8forums.

Please visit Windows Update and install every update available, it may take a couple of times to get them all.

warning   Warning
Programs that claim to update your drivers install either the wrong or corrupted drivers.
If you have installed any driver with Driver Booster 3, please remove them as it may cause trouble.

With laptops, you only need the drivers provided by the manufacturer. The manufacturer alter the drivers in such a way that you are forced to install their drivers, others will give you problems.
Please remove Driver Booster 3 and Intel Driver Update Utility, you don't need any driver update utility.

Please remove some files from the D and E partition to increase the free space to at least 10-15%
Every partition needs at least 10-15% free space so Windows can do its thing in the background.
warning   Warning
Less free space could cause BSOD's

Thanks for your reply, axe0.
1. I always install all windows updates, however, I am not so convinced to optional ones.
2. Driver Booster 3 was installed recently, after I spot the problem. I downloaded some driver updates thinking that would help.
Anyway, I followed your advice and restored my system to a previous state and removed the program (together with Intel Driver Update Utility).
3. Dell doesn't officially support Win 8.1 for my laptop's model (Precision M6600). They however support Windows 8. Can I rely in this case on manufacturer's drivers for 'an older system version'?
4. 10-15% percent is really relative I think (for HDDs with a capacity lower than 200 GB it makes sense, but what about 2TB/3TB/4TB? Is this rule still valid?) I am going to clean the space and see if that helps anyway. There is one more thing to add. What about the page file (swap)? Since I have 32 GB of RAM I decreased it to 1GB. Maybe that can cause problems as well?

Thanks,
Michal

1. Optional updates could also improve the system and fix bugs, you don't have to really install them all, but some might help.
2. it helps prevent problems with not using them
3. Yes you can, it is the same for me and everything works as it should.
4. It is the best to have 10-15% free space, I haven't seen problems with hard drives as large as you describe it, but I would have at least 10-15% free space to prevent them.

The pagefile will only cause trouble with what it is meant for if you change the size, the virtual memory.
If there are problems with the memory, you'll get notified.
It is also used for a complete memory dump, but normally you don't configure a complete memory dump.

Please read this tutorial about changing the size of the virtual memory so you might understand it more.
