Hi.
I have a friend's laptop here - says he's been getting crashes lately and asked for help.

I've done some work on it, and although I can see it's been crashing, it has not crashed for me (yet). I don't know if it is a result of what I did or not, and would like some expert advice please.

Toshiba Satellite C55T-A5394
i3-3110M 2.4GHz 6GB RAM x64
Intel HD 4000 graphics

The errors I've found using WhoCrashed are:

0x3b (graphics)
0xd1 (sleep/hibernation)
0x133 (DPC Watchdog Violation)
0xa (IRQL-not-less-than)

Here's what I've done so far:

Turned fast startup off
Changed "closing lid" to sleep (from hibernate)
Changed to clean boot (via msconfig-made no difference)

sfc /scannow:
The only issue is
2015-09-13 14:36:17, Info CSI 00006576 [SR] Cannot verify component files for 82b1609b52e1fbf1b9f99e28e760f320, Version = 6.3.9600.17670, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral, manifest is damaged (TRUE)

Installed all Windows Updates, including optional
Checked Avast chest - nothing there
Checked Avast scans - all recent (within a few days) and nothing found
Ran RKILL & TDSSKiller (just to be sure there was nothing murking around)
Removed settings by CryptoPrevent
Updated Apple iCloud
Updated Classic Shell
Updated Java & verified Flash is up-to-date
Ran Auslogics disk defrag (even though it was only 3% fragmented)
"Sleep" Crashplan backup for 2 days
Checked temperatures and HDD SMART using Speccy (all OK)
Check HDD SMART attributes over several hours using DiskCheckup - all is "good"
Removed Avast! Free and turned on Defender
Removed an old verion of ccleaner and installed latest version
Ran CHKDSK (from within Windows, no switches - and it said it found no errors)
Removed the graphics driver that came through Windows Update and restored the latest one on the Toshiba website.
(From: Intel HD 4000 v10.18.10.3445 dtd 10-28-2013 To: Toshiba Intel v10.18.10.3308 dtd 9-16-2013) Yes, I installed an older version, but that is what is current for Toshiba.

Ran Memtest86+ for 2 hrs 20 min without error.

Since these changes, I have not seen a BSOD *YET*, but I notice that every time I start up the computer, the HDD is pegged at 100% for about 3 minutes, and the computer is slow to completely finalize/freshen the desktop. I can't for the life of me figure out why it's so slow to boot and why the HDD is pegged for the first few minutes.

Thanks.

Edit: I have found now that, after the computer sleeps, I am not able to get back to the desktop. A click of the mouse wakes it up and brings me to the lock screen, and another click tries to go to the desktop (no password), but it remains at a blank screen and just hangs. It does the same thing when I close the lid and come back later.

This is what some of the dump files say. I had one that would not open, which most likely is corruption.

This is more code than I usually post, but I thought it would show that there is very little consistent, that I can find. The 2 thing I did notice is Avast was mentioned a few times. I know you said that you uninstalled it. That may have been the issue. The other thing I did notice was I/O errors were reported in the stack as well as NTFS errors and Filter Manager errors. Those are all indicative of Hard Drive problems.

What I would try is right click on the start icon and select Command prompt administrator, give admin permissions and copy/paste this into the window that opens and press enter sfc /scannow . If you decide to type it in, please notice the space between the sfc and the /. We want it to say no integrity violations were found. If it says there where corrupt files that could not be repaired, please reboot and run it again. You may have to run it 3 times with reboots in between each time.

If that does not work, in an elevated command prompt, try running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Just let me know how it comes out.

Hi essenbe!

I have run sfc /scannow three times, rebooting in between. As mentioned in the first post, the only thing stopping it from giving me a clean bill of health, is this:

2015-09-14 10:59:20, Info CSI 00006576 [SR] Cannot verify component files for 82b1609b52e1fbf1b9f99e28e760f320, Version = 6.3.9600.17670, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral, manifest is damaged (TRUE)

I will try the DISM tool now. I will also install Macrium Reflect and make an image before I do anything else, so I may be a while.

BTW: I have also removed TeamViewer (in addition to Avast! Free).

Stay tuned! ;)View attachment 65466

I will run chkdsk /r as soon as the files are backed up. Then I will image. Or, maybe I will image first, then run chkdsk /r...

Try chckdsk /R then sfc again. Do you have the ISO file for that OS or an installation USB?

I would like to get rid of the corruption first, which may be the cause in itself. One of the above files says the component store is corrupted, plus one of the dump files would not open, usually a sign of corruption.

I hope to have the Master of SFC problems (among other things) coming to take a look.

Also, after finishing what you are going to try, then try to run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup. When that finishes, try to run the restorehealth command again.

Try chckdsk /R then sfc again. Do you have the ISO file for that OS or an installation USB?

I downloaded a W8.1x64 ISO from the MS website and burned it to disk, turned off secure boot and changed boot order to DVD first, in case I need it to get into safe mode or do some repair (if things get too messed up). Don't you love W8? LOL

I went to Walmart and grabbed a Canvio 1TB portable to run backups and images on. I have to be extra careful with this thing, as he uses it for his business, and I don't want to lose a thing.

I would like to get rid of the corruption first, which may be the cause in itself. One of the above files says the component store is corrupted, plus one of the dump files would not open, usually a sign of corruption.

Also, after finishing what you are going to try, then try to run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup. When that finishes, try to run the restorehealth command again.

Okay so here's the plan:

-file backup is complete
-HDD image is almost done
Next I will-
-run chkdsk /r at boot
-run sfc /scannow
-run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
-run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Assuming that fixes the corruption, I will delete the image and make a new one.

Thanks. Will report back later.

Sounds good. When you finish, if the DISM command still won't work, mount the ISO file and look in the sources file and make sure you have an install.wim . Use the drive letter from the mounted ISO file and try this command. Assume your mounted ISO is assigned drive E. run

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:E:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

That is giving it a source other than Windows Update and limiting it to the mounted install.wim and excluding Windows update as a source.

Thanks. But I'm still getting 100% disk usage for the first three minutes on boot - regular and clean boot.

Let's see if I still have problems when I close the lid.....

Edit: when I close the lid and let it sleep, I've still got problems.
Open the lid, click the mouse button: the lock screen appears.
Click the mouse button again to go to desktop (no password): I get the light blue background screen, no desktop, just sits there, and if I do nothing, it goes back to the lock screen. :( wonder if it will work after 3 minutes? LOL

Edit#2: Yep, I was right. About 3 minutes later, I was able to move the mouse/touch the screen and the login screen appeared.

Anything else you think I should remove?

There is a ton of Toshiba bloatware. I would get rid of anything not necessary. Wild Tangent games gave me fits on another machine I had. There is a lot of Adobe programs, 2 readers. Norton is a known cause of problems. Driver Magician?

Check the startup programs. Nothing needs to run at startup except the AV, which should be MSE, at least for a trial. Uninstall Norton and then use the Norton Removal Utility https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us .

I know a lot of people use it, but Apple Software causes some people a lot of problems.

BTW, I know you use it, but I use ESET Smart Security, when I installed Unchecky, ESET went crazy. I had to disable the AV just to install it. Then when I turned it back on, ESET immediately quarantined it. I did send it in for a submission so they will check it for a false positive.

I know you said that you removed Google Drive, But Google, Firefox, Apple and Norton and Adobe (if you let it run at startup) seem to cause a lot of background activity.

Hi,
Just wanted to post the results of the DISM tools:

View attachment 65481

DISM Component cleanup failed error 14098
DISM Restore Health failed error 0x800f081f
View attachment 65482
Haven't had a chance to research these yet.
Have a couple things that need to get done right away, then I will address these errors and the software.
Thanks!

Edit: p.s. there is no install.wim on this ISO? only install.esd & install.exe. Am I doing something wrong? I guess I can use the ESD2ISO tool to get that?

uh...no, I guess not....

Simrick try this. I don't know if it works in 8, but it works in 10. Mount the ISO file or plug in the USB flash drive with the installation files on them. Windows will give it a drive Letter. Look in the Sources folder for an install.wim or install.esd. If, for example you have an .esd file and the drive letter was E, you would run this command,

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:E:\Sources\Install.esd:1 /limitaccess

If you have an install.wim and the drive letter is E, run this command

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:E:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Whichever you have, just adjust the path to the install.xxx

Well, I guess I'm a bonehead, essenbe. I was trying to point it at the DVD I had burned from the ISO, and not to the mounted the ISO itself.

Edit: I have a theory: Almost every time I shut down, I get the warning message that an app is preventing it from shutting down, and it's the generic icon, and no name. One time, I clicked cancel, went into Task Manager and ended the Apple Bonjour process. It then shutdown without a problem. I will remove that program as soon as the DISM tool has completed.

Bonjour is part of the Apple utilities you have installed. I think if you uninstall it, none of the Apple programs will work. It has caused me problems a couple of times. I even ended up doing a clean install because of it and the Apple stuff. Some people use it with no problems. Others have fits with it.

You are not a Bonehead. Either way should work as long as you have the path correct and if you use the correct .esd or .wim command.

I don't understand. This is an ISO using the MS media creation tool for W8.1x64.

I think Bonjour is a standalone product and can be installed/uninstalled without affecting the other Apple programs. I will try uninstalling it now.
