PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA when a usb device is plugged

Hello everyone,
I think i have this issue since a month or so when i upgraded to windows 10, i don't remember having it on windows 8.1.
Everytime i plug an usb device, either a phone, a usb stick or anything else, there's a chance that the pc freezes and reboots.
I noticed that this mostly happens when the drivers of the device are not installed, also sometimes the pc reboots succesfully if i leave the usb device plugged in while other times i must remove the device otherwise it keeps crashing.
Also it doesn't matter which usb plug i use, either the frontal ones or the ones on the back cause the issue.

I managed to get multiple dumps of the crash, but i couldn't find any culprits so that's why i'm here asking for help.

Here's the zip file with the dumps etc

Thank you in advance! :)

Hi venzo92,

Welcome to the 8forums.

A driver from Daemon tools is found in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ called dtsoftbus02.sys
Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.

Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

  1. Uninstall Daemon Tools
  2. Download the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
    • Double click the executable to open it
    • Click on the button shown below

34700d1440923396-bsod-0x124-whea_uncorrectable_error-nothing-works-a887c9d9e7.png

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window

Please do the following:

  • Open an admin command prompt
  • Copy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enter
  • When it finished reboot your system
  • Open again an admin command prompt
  • Enter sfc/scannow again

If sfc/scannow doesn't say "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation", please upload the cbs.log file located at {windows partition}\Windows\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
System File Check(SFC a.k.a. Windows Resource Protection) needs to have your system rebooted in order for sfc to try to fix the problems that it finds.

DRIVER VERIFIER

Please make a backup of your important files and get your rescue media or create one.
Please create a restore point.

Please follow this tutorial run driver verifier.

Some windows drivers are blamed in a few crashes, but that usually means that a 3rd party driver is actually the cause.
Driver verifier stresses your drivers and will crash your pc if any driver fails due to a violation.

Driver verifier should be performed for a max of 48 hours, or when you have a bluescreen, whatever comes first.

If driver verifier has found a violation and you can't get back into windows normally, try to boot into safe mode and reset in safe mode driver verifier, or in the troubleshooting options open command prompt and type verifier /reset.

Note   Note
Your system will act very sluggishly while driver verifier is enabled, this is normal as your drivers will be being subjected to heavy testing in order to make them crash.

Thank you Axe0, sfc didn't find any violation this time, i ran it few days ago when i was trying to fix the issue and it had some violations.
as for driver verifier it's enabled now, though no crashes for now (unless i plug an usb device).
For memtest is it necessary to run it for 8 passes? i did 2 passes with no errors and it took almost 16h (it's 64gb of ram :S)
If it was a ram issue shouldn't the crashes appear randomly? instead it happens only with usb devices

8 complete passes are required with MemTest86+, less is not conclusive.

There are a few things with usb ports.
- The USB port can be broken which gives bluescreens when connecting a device
- The USB connection needs to save some data to the memory which is corrupted
- The device that is connected to the USB is corrupted or something which causes bluescreens.

if i install a clean w10 on a different hdd and i don't get the bsod then it's for sure a driver issue right? if so i might try this route since it would take less time

Hello, just an update,
memtest didn't find anything unusual, i was tired of doing further tests since this issue is taking me more than a week of my time.
I did a clean install and everything is working fine, a driver was certainly causing the issue, now i'm taking a look to see if it properly works after installing each driver.
Thank you for your support, in case i find the culprit i'll post it on here so others with my same issue might be able to fix the issue without a clean install

oh well i should have done this from the beginning, 2 days to reinstall any windows app is far better than troubleshoot the issue for 10+ days :p
