It crashes after waking from sleep. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 restarts until I'm able to get back into the OS.

Attached is the dump file.

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Please provide this info: http://www.eightforums.com/crashes-debugging/3099-bsod-posting-instructions.html

A couple of problems were noted when I ran the memory dump:

You have the 2005 version of ASACPI.sys installed - it is a known cause of BSOD's in Win7 systems. I suspect that it'll do the same thing for Win8 systems. Please go to the Asus website and download/install the ATK0110 ACPI Utility driver for your system/motherboard. If you can't locate the driver, please provide the exact make and model of your motherboard.

Your optical mouse drivers date from 2009. Please uninstall them and use the default Windows mouse drivers to see if that helps.
If you need the functionality that these drivers offer - please ensure that you get an updated version of the driver that's dated from after the release of Win7 (at a minimum).

The BSOD blames your ATI drivers. Please:
- uninstall your current ATI drivers
- use this procedure to install the DRIVERS ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure

Hi, I tried going with the instructions on installing the ATI drivers only but when I get to installing the drivers manually it says that "Windows already has the most up to date drivers" or something similar. I tried uninstalling anything ATI related before attempting this to no avail. Is this something that will be fixed soon by ATI or should I just uninstall Windows 8 for now?

Hi, I managed to get the ATI drivers installed over the default one installed by Windows. However, it still crashes. I attached another dump for your review. Thank you so much for your assistance in this.

P.S. I also updated the ATK0110 and the Intellipoint Mouse Drivers as you suggested.

ASACPI.sys (ATK0110) dates from 2006 - this is still one of the drivers that causes BSOD's (the 2009/2010 drivers are OK)
Please provide the make and model of your mobo and we'll locate the appropriate driver for you.

The BSOD error is a STOP 0x116. The next step is to remove the video drivers completely and let Windows Update install it's driver. This driver may be more compatible, but it may not have all the functions that you're used to. Give it a try and see if it helps.

If that doesn't fix it, then it's most likely a problem with the card itself - and the next step is to try another card.

I have an Asus motherboard model P5KC. I tried the Windows-provided graphic driver as well as the one from AMD's site; no difference. It's rather odd that if the issue is with the graphics card itself I would experience intermittent issues, but the system only crashes when waking up from sleep.

My Computer

In the olden days (WinXP) this problem would be solely due to graphics drivers (sleep/hibernate issues)
But with Vista/7/and now 8, the storage drivers and other chipset drivers are involved in the sleep/hibernate process and can affect the functioning/crashes.

The ASACPI.sys driver is a very low-level performer - so it's problems often resemble hardware problems.

Your mobo isn't supported with Win7, so making Win8 work will be a chore.
If you check in the Utilities section of the downloads for your mobo you'll find the ATK0110 utility there also. This one dates from 2009 and is one of the good one's (and it's Win7 compatible).

In case you can't find it, I'm uploading a zip of it to this post. As with any unknown file, be sure to scan with an antivirus BEFORE opening it.

How do I install the driver? I don't see an executable for the Windows 7 version.

Edit: I just replaced the driver inside of the C:\Windows\System32 folder with the one you attached, but it still crashes. It may be just as you said .. the mobo may be too old to make it reliably work in Windows 8, but it's strange that it works so well in Windows 7.

Use the AsAcpiIns.exe file in the appropriate directory (64 or 32).
I'm not familiar with the installer's routine, so run it again "just in case"

If it still BSOD's, post back with the memory dumps and we'll move on from there.

There's still traces of the Primax/ Dell USB Optical Mouse driver (NMgamingms.sys) on your system. And it dates from 2009.
Uninstall those drivers. If you're not able to , then post back and we'll give instructions on how to safely remove it.

All other drivers are fairly recent. The BSOD still blames your video drivers (a STOP 0x116). Have you tried the troubleshooting steps in this post: STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting - Windows 7 Forums

If so, that leaves either fiddling with older drivers/Windows Update drivers, trying a new video card, or trying another known compatible OS (such as Win7 or Vista).

If so, that leaves either fiddling with older drivers/Windows Update drivers, trying a new video card, or trying another known compatible OS (such as Win7 or Vista).

I will uninstall the drivers (although I did install them straight from Microsoft's site, as it's a Microsoft Optical Mouse). Honestly, I think it's something with Windows 8, as it's not the only thing that has gone wrong. The Consumer Preview was a nightmare to get stable when I first installed it. For some strange reason, it had all 4 CPUs at 100% CPU usage, but it never did exhibit this particular behavior of crashing while waking from sleep.

When Release Preview came available, it crashed during installation. After the crash when waking from sleep, I thought I had a corrupt download, so I reinstalled Windows 8 and again it crashed during installation and when waking from sleep.

If you'd be willing, I'd like to attach the very first dump I got during installation for your review, because I believe the error message was different. It's a shot in the dark....

There's a lot of issues with video drivers in Win8 - and we're beginning to see issues with using different C-states (article describing them is here: Everything You Need to Know About the CPU C-States Power Saving Modes | Hardware Secrets ) also.

Video issues are sometimes resolved by resorting to Windows Update video drivers. Otherwise, the latest release of Win8 drivers offers the most likely chance for video driver stability. I don't know the exact cause of the problems, but in the event that it's caused by programs in the video driver package other than the drivers themselves - I usually suggest this link to installing the DRIVERS ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure
It includes a link from AMD on how to remove drivers that aren't cooperating with you.

If you cannot change the C-states in your BIOS, DM1 has suggested this workaround: http://www.eightforums.com/crashes-debugging/6990-windows-8-freezes-randomly.html#post96504 (I have no clue if this works or not).

The initial memory dump shows a STOP 0x139 - Kernel Security Check Failure Interestingly, I found several posts that stated a bug that caused this was fixed in the RP.

I have to wonder about 2 things tho':
1) Is your processor too old to support Win8? It's possible that the security check is related to security functions implemented in newer processors.
2) Your BIOS dates from 2007. It's possible that changes to it could make the system more stable. But BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL when flashing the BIOS. One little mistake can physically wreck your motherboard.

Yes, it seems not to matter if I use the Windows Driver or the driver from ATI's site. I decided not to touch the BIOS. For right now, I'm just disabling sleep in the power options, since it's the only time the system crashes. Otherwise, the system seems stable. I think the video driver needs some fine tuning. I noticed blurry font on some dialog boxes and other graphical glitches.

Your help has been invaluable, and I'm holding out hope that these issues will be fixed before the RTM version comes out.

I did, but my symptoms are different. So far *knock on wood* there hasn't been any freezes. The only time there's a problem is when it's waking from sleep, so I disabled the sleep option for the time being.
