Hi all,

I have a small ITX sized PC with the following specs:

  • Motherboard: Asus Z97i-plus
  • CPU: i5-4690S
  • SSD: Crucual C300 64 GB (Very old but good)
  • HDD: WD30EFRX
  • VGA: Only the IGP
  • RAM: 2x4 GB Corsair DD3 XMS3
  • PSU: Corsair RM-450
The PC is running 24/7, and its roles are: htpc, downloading, FTP server, SSH server, storage, etc. All parts are half year old (except the SSD). Originally I was using win7, and there were no issues at all, however on April23 I installed Win8.1 Pro, followed by the latest drivers available at Asus. Since then Windows is crashing basically daily. I have 50 crash dumps already.

Tools, that are running all the time:
  • Kodi (aka xbmc)
  • utorrent
  • FTP server
  • SSH server
  • Teamspeak 3 server+client
I tried a couple of things already:
  • Checking the info with nirsoft's bluescreenviewer
  • Analyzing the dumps with the app called Whocrashed
  • Google A LOT
  • Running windows update and install basically all hotfixes.
  • Updated the LAN driver directly from Intel site (BLuescreenview and Whocrashed suggested to do this, as 3 times from the 50 a LAN driver related sys file was indicated in the "caused by driver" column in bluescreenviewer.
  • Updated motherboad bios.
  • Played with fast boot, hybernation settings.
  • Checked Event viewer: Application log, system log, nothing special was found prior to the BSODs

Im sure, I dont have any hw problems, as I didnt have any issues on Win7.
Cooling is fine as well, temperatures are fine.
Power supply is also fine.

I suspect one of the Asus drivers, but Im not sure, which one.

I would appreciate some help
Thanks

Hello ehajgbo,

I have analysed a few dump files.
If I understand them, the cause of most of the analysed dump files could be related to the memory.
Please run a ram test with memtest86+. RAM test with Memtest86+ | Sevenforums.

Many thanks for the quick feedback.

Since everything was fine on Win7 and problem appeared only after installing Win8, I discarded the possibility of any hw faults. I didnt even run memtest, because the situation looked so obvious.
But an hour ago I tried memtest as suggested and it immediately threw high amount of errors. After 1 pass it said around 188k errors.
Im not sure, what the memtest printout exactly means, but I guess, I shouldnt see anything with red background at the bottom half of the screen :(

I think its enough to know whether the motherboard is faulty or the RAM moduls, so I know, what to RMA.
To find this out, Im gonna play with memtest and with other RAM moduls.

bytheway; Any idea, why the BSODs started only with Win 8.1? Why was everything fine with Win7? Or is it just a coincidence?

Unfortunately I have almost no experience with windows 7 so I can't suggest anything.

I did some further tests:

  • Memtest with spare RAM moduls in this mini itx pc: no faults
  • Memtest with 'faulty' RAM moduls in other PC: memory errors
The result seems to be consistent, so Im gonna RMA the faulty RAM moduls.
Meanwhile I inserted the spare RAM moduls, and Im gonna monitor the system.
If there are no more BSODs, Im also gonna mark the thread as solved after a few days.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Hi,

Although not too much time has passed since I changed the RAMs, but I think, my PC is fine now. No new reboots. Faulty RAMs are under RMA already.

Thanks once again the help
