Windows 8 frequent freezing ... help!

This is driving me absolutely mental! Windows 8 keeps freezing, I have to do a manual shutdown. I've read and tried a lot of the forums fixes, but nothing seems to be working. Really don't want to go back to Windows 7 ... can anyone help?

    Hello tamara17.
(not knowing what you have already tried)

    Install 8 on unallocated space.
Do not overwrite a previous installation.
    Disconnect unnecessary hardware.
Try not to dual boot if you can.
    Try pulling your graphics card.
    Try pulling all unnecessary cards.
Install drivers for 8 if available.
    Check minimum requirements for 8.
    Check temperatures.
Are there any odd beeps when turning on your computer?
Make sure your memory is seated.
    Remove dust from the system.
    Are fans working?
Are there any external devices connected to your system?

    Hope this helps.

There seems to be a large number of people having freeze / crash problems with 8RP.
I do not know what has changed from 8DP, to 8CP, to 8RP.
Personally, I have had no problems at all with all versions of 8.

Sorry you are having difficulties with your installation.

Hi, thanks for the response. I've installed a fresh version of windows 8 on unallocated space and am not dual booting. I've downloaded all the drivers for my motherboard, cpu and video card, and run in compatibility mode for windows 7 (the second time, the first time I just installed them normally). The temperatures are fine, everything is dust free. Did memtest and everything was fine. No beeps when turning on the computer and all the fans are working. The only external devices are my Logitech g15 keyboard and g5 mouse and canon printer.

Is it the NVidia drivers that are the problem or my specific grahpics card? I have a GTX 560ti, but have a spare GTX 560 lying around. Would it resolve the problem if I swapped the video cards and did a clean install again? I'm considering going back to windows 7, but I really like the layout of windows 8!

After doing all the above...still freezing?
Your motherboard should have a vga video port.
    Make sure it is enabled.
Eliminate the video issue (or not) by trying to run Windows without a graphics card.
    Still freezing?

Windows 8 won't require any more hardware than Windows 7

It is curious why so many people are having issues with 8 and not with 7... !

Curious if you had problems in Windows 7. (probably not, right)
And if you had any problems (with 8) before installing any drivers ??

No, had no probs at all with Windows 7. I installed the motherboard and video drivers pretty much straight away when I did all three installs. Perhaps I shouldn't have done that?! Once I installed them normally, and put all my programs on. Then I installed the basic drivers (motherboard and nvida), then I installed them in compatibility mode on the third go. Perhaps I shouldn't install any and see how it goes?!

I think Windows (7 / 8) has enough drivers to run most basic components (motherboards, CPU, basic video, ethernet etc...)
You have done alot, and you are right to try again without adding anything first.

Any yellow triangles or red flags in your device manager?
Any exclamation points when looking at installed devices?

There was for the SMBus originally I think, but then I installed the driver. Nothing else though. I'll do another fresh install (gah!) and try not installing any drivers and see if it keeps happening.
On the plus side, I took out my video card and the freezes seemed to have stopped. I don't, however, want to run my computer permanently without the vid card I also had the problem with the HID keyboard device for the G15, but managed to get that working by doing the fix on this forum. I'll let you know how I go with the fresh install without any drivers.

Okay, did a fresh install and didn't update any drivers and it froze pretty much straight away. It was a different sort of freeze (normally I can Ctrl+alt+del to get into the task mgr screen), the mouse was moving, but nothing was happening, couldn't open / do anything. I left it for a while, but eventually had to shut it down manually. I've done a new log collector if that helps at all?? This is driving me crazy!
