BSOD when starting my laptop - Windows 8.1

Hello everyone,
I'm posting this message because of a problem I have with my laptop. Since two or three weeks ago, I saw almost 3 blue screens of death when starting (booting up) my laptop. Windows 8.1 starts, I can reach the desktop, but suddenly some programs don't respond. Today was the latest BSOD I got.

I remember that in middle March/early April the graphics driver was updated. I'm not sure if it is related to that. As I can't read the dump files Windows generated after each BSOD, I need your help understanding what is going on in my laptop. Mine is almost half a year old, no new hardware was added or replaced.

I was thinking of reinstalling Windows but I think of that as the last resort. I hope you guys can help me identifying the root of the problem.

I'm attaching the results from running "dm_log_collector.exe", as suggested by the pinned post.

If you need to complete dump files (I uploaded the last two ones to my personal OneDrive), I can post the URLs to download them and help in the diagnostics.

Thank you!

Jorge

PD: sorry for my bad English, I need to practice it more :)

Hi,
Try removing "freemi upnp" from computer and see if problem persist.

If you're unable to boot into system use F8 to boot into safe mode.

Follow below link to provide system information, but do not include dump files ( exclude them from zip file )
http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

Few questions:
When did you last time update windows?
What Antivirus software you use?
When did you last time scan your PC?
What 3rd party applications/drivers/services have you installed recently?

Hi Addictive Gamer,
Thanks for your reply. I don't recognize the application's name you provided (freemi upnp).

You can get the zip file generated by "dm_log_collector.exe" in the OneDrive link I posted before, as suggested by link "Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions". The zip file generated is "HOME-JORGE-02_05_2015_190917_66.zip", sorry for not provide the zip file name before.

About your questions:
- I updated Windows 8.1 on April 30th. Some optional updates were available. However, as I stated before, the BSODs occurred since several weeks ago.
- I'm using Windows Defender which is bult-in in Windows 8.1.
- I have Windows Defender set to scan my computer on a daily basis.
- I've installed several applications because of my master degree studies. However, as I stated before, I suspect from a graphics driver update which was installed on middle March/early April. Since then, these BSODs start to happen.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Jorge

Hi,
Not sure if either of these suggestions will work, and I have no clue on how to debug Microsoft services.

Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly

1. Try disabling all SQL instances and services ( or check for updates ).
2. Update .NET framework ( probably you did already )
3. Perform full system scan with some other Anti Virus such as Kaspersky ( possible infection )

Hopefully either of these will work :)

Oh did you see that in the files I uploaded? If you need more information, you can get the last 2 dump files in the same OneDrive URL I posted. Those have a size over 200MB though, and almost 1GB after unzipping them.

I'm not sure about the SQL Server instances, as I have just one for SQL Server 2012 Express, I use it occasionally for development. I will set it as disabled.

I will try to use another antivirus to analyze my laptop. Do you think AVG is as good as Kaspersky? I'd prefer a free alternative.

I will try your suggestions in some hours. I'll let you know the results.

Regards,
Jorge

Not sure which is better, just giving an AV example with decent detection rate and heuristic function to perform a full scan not to use it all the time.
AVG / Avast are not best option during BSOD fixing time as these are known for causing troubles.

There are also offline solutions so it's your choice.
When scan is complete remove it and switch back to MSE.

I will go for Avira, and also Malwarebytes (which I installed several months ago but I always forget to update). I'll post any suspicious or bad thing identified.

By the way, I started my computer today from cold boot and there wasn't any BSOD so far. As you can see in the dump files, there was several days between the last 2 BSODs.

Jorge

Hi,
I analyzed my computer using Avira and Malwarebytes and it seems to be alright after all. Malwarebytes didn't find anything wrong; Avira found some old programs that I had in my documents (keygens and other stuff that I used since Windows XP times - circa 2005/2006).

I uploaded the results from the Avira scan in the OneDrive URL I posted before. It's called "AVSCAN-20150503-140951-120491E6.LOG"

There was no BSOD today whatsoever. So if the dump files doesn't give any light on that specifically is affecting my computer, then I guess I need to wait for another BSOD to happen (which sounds uncomfortable for me). Or I can reinstall Windows 8.1 which seems to be a better solution.

Any other ideas?

Regards,
Jorge

Impossible to tell if problem is resolved unless new BSOD occurs.
wait for few days and then we'll see if that worked.

Hi,
There was no new BSOD since May 2nd. I think that installing Avira and using it to scan my laptop helped with this issue. If the BSOD suddenly comes up again in the future, I think I can open a new thread.

Thank you Addictive Gamer for your help on this.

Regards,
Jorge
