Hi! I'm a new user to the forums. I was hoping someone could help me with my BSOD problem.

Over Christmas, I had my HDD swapped out because of a failure. That was linked to my laptop losing power abruptly on a low battery. I think my battery is dying, but the strange thing is that there are no warnings or shutdown procedures - perhaps that driver is not installed or malfunctioning? Anyway, my most recent bout of BSOD was brought on by a sudden power failure (accidentally left the power cord unplugged). I was worried at first that this new HDD was also failing, but seemed unlikely because it is only 3 months old. I think some driver was corrupted when the power went out, but it's not something the auto repair will fix. I also can't restore to a previous point, and I have no recovery disk. I've attached the diagnostics as a zip.

Any help at all would be appreciated!View attachment 60422

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8 Version 6.3 (Build 9600)
With most laptops, the system will keep running (even if the battery is dead) as long as it's receiving power from an AC Adapter.
If the AC Adapter becomes disconnected (when the battery is dead), then the system will shut off without any notice.
Today at work I had a system like this - and the plug for the AC Adapter (inside the computer) was damaged - so wiggling it would cut off the power and shut down the system.

This report may help us to see the circumstances surrounding the shutdowns:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID

Your UEFI/BIOS dates from 2012. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the UEFI/BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard. If possible, use the "inside Windows" flash mechanism (if your OEM provides one) - that is much more forgiving than the traditional (floppy drive) flash method.

This device has problems in Device Manager:
Fresco Logic xHCI (USB3) Root Hub USB\ROOT_HUB_FL30\5&1FE96C23&0 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
Please visit the Asus support website for your model and download/install the drivers for this device.

Most of the BSOD's listed in the WER section of MSINFO32 blame RiftEnabler (and the memory dumps that you've uploaded) - a driver for the Oculus Rift program. A search of the web shows that there's a lot of BSOD issues associated with this driver. To start, download a fresh copy of the latest, Win8.1 compatible Oculus Rift program. Then uninstall the old program and install the freshly downloaded version. Monitor to see if there are further BSOD's.

It appears (from the dump files) that you have updated the Oculus Rift program - and that the problems still remain. Please uninstall this program and test the system without it in order to see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, I'd suggest checking for solutions at https://support.oculus.com/hc/en-us (I also wonder about this headset and it's ability to function with Win10 - maybe try it inside a Win10 VM?).

While it's most likely that the Oculus Rift driver is to blame, it's still possible that it's doing this because of interference with other drivers. So, here's some more stuff to try....

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Beyond this I have these 4 suggestions:
1. Get ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all
2. Get ALL available, Win8.1 compatible updates from the manufacturer's website.
3. Start with these free hardware diagnostics: http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html
4. If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: http://www.carrona.org/verifier.html

Hi Usasma,

Thank you for your very detailed and insightful response! I greatly appreciate it!

I have downloaded and run the HWMONITOR and have attached the log file. As for the UEFI/BIOS, I checked on ASUS's website for updates, but there doesn't seem to be anything for my chipset (Intel® HM65 Express Chipset). I'm not too pleased with my ASUS and the support they provide. I won't be buying another one in the future. My ASUS is a model N53SN. I have also searched for the needed drivers online, but it always comes back to the driver update page on the ASUS website for my model, which hasn't been updated since like... 1950... grumble.

Removing the Oculus Rift drivers seems to have fixed the BSOD problem. I'll have to look into a way to get my USB3.0 driver updated though, as I can't seem to find the right drivers online.

Thank you so much!

P.S. For any other users out there who need to uninstall something while you're in Safe Mode, yet Safe Mode doesn't allow you to do so, you can use the same program I did, which is SafeMSI.exe and turns on the Uninstaller in Safe Mode, which can be found here.

I have installed the USB3.0 driver from the Fresco Logic website. Thanks so much, usasma! You were a big help! I've also made sure to make a backup point and recovery USB so I don't need to deal with this again in the future!

Cheers!
