This issue has been happening for quite sometime, explorer crashes for few seconds then screen and icons come back, just shows the color of my start menu background.
About month ago i did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro because of another issue, i recall then seeing this issue but not as much as now. So feeling should not be due to corrupt windows files. This crash happens at least few times each day. No Blue Screen or error message, just exactly as described.
So far i have tried :
System File checker, no integrity violations
Dism restore health
reinstalling Graphics drivers, also have newest ones.
Updating all other software and if any device drivers were available
disable addons in Firefox and Internet Explorer
Checked for viruses, Malwarebytes, Norton Internet Security on my system and even Windows Malicious Removal tool

I thought it seemed to happen more so when using Firefox, but occurred without it being used. I can not pinpoint something that i am using (program) that could be causing this, but i notice sometimes when i left or right click i will see the blue busy circle spinning for few seconds, then explorer will crash.

In Event viewer the constant faulting module path seems to mostly be C:\Windows\system32\DEVRTL.dll
I used Windows Debugger but can not really understand it well. Few other Faulting module paths listed, all microsoft.
Other things i did not try was to disable all context menus except Microsoft ones, as this seems be a common issue for explorer to crash.

Here is one Event log

Hi jds63 ^_^,

Random application crashes which persist even after a clean installation of Windows could point towards a faulty piece of hardware. Could you please run the below diagnostics and report back the results?

O.k.,ty for looking at my post, little confused you want me to run everything listed on this links page ? I already ran a Memory diagnostics from Windows 8.1 tool, showed no errors, memory is brand new, i know that does not always mean it's o.k..
Still want me to try memtest ?

Even though Event viewer is seeing a lot of errors, my problem issue is the crashing of explorer. PC is running good, if anything could be GPU drivers as the card brand new. Crashes are not consistent as said, sometimes none at all.

Take a look at my system specs my drives are SSD, Crucial brand, no Tools to test these drives, SMART readings good.
Pretty much whole system is new. I will look over rest of your site.

As for SSD diagnostics, really not much out there to use, SMART readings are good, similar program Intel makes for there SSD will show

Model number, capacity, and firmware version
Drive health, Estimated drive life remaining
SMART attributes (also available for hard disk drives and non-Intel® SSDs)
Identify Device information (also available for hard disk drives and non-Intel SSDs)
Optimize the performance of an Intel SSD using Trim functionality
Optimize the performance of an Intel SSD in RAID 0 using Trim functionality Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) 11.0 or greater.
Run quick and full diagnostic scans to test the read and write functionality of an Intel SSD
Check and tune your system settings for optimal Intel SSD performance, power efficiency, and endurance
View your system information and hardware configuration, such as central processing unit (CPU),
chipset, controller name, and driver versions
Run Secure Erase on a secondary Intel SSD

Believe most important what your looking for running these would be read and write tests
As do not perform chkdsk on a SSD from what i know. SMART i can get a report for you.

Keep looking at your link................... No explorer crash at all today, PC been on for 6 hours

Hi jds63 ^_^,

The diagnostics look good. If you are still facing the problem, could you please follow the below steps (Thanks usasma!) -
Here's the DISM stuff:

Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
Code:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Code:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
If the problem is fixable, you can use this command to repair it (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after typing it:
Code:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
From this article: Repair a Windows Image

Also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

If after following the above instructions, you are still facing problems, kindly re-run the diagnostic tool and upload a freshly generated ZIP file.

Let me know how it goes ^_^

-Pranav

I do not know if this resolved the issue, but i disabled a shell extension from Nero with CCleaner, also trying to disable a Logitech Download Assistant startup. Quite a pesky startup to disable, did it in task manager plus the software itself and still checks for updates as far as i see a log in User Temp folder still. Seems to run off a service host, puts a run32dll in Windows system32 folder.

Nero Shell extension caused me a crash error only once in Event Viewer, reasons i disabled it to see if it helps. I felt Logitech Download Assistant might be causing an issue, so i tried that too. Every error i was getting was always due to Devrtl.dll.

What i am trying to say now is the issue has not happened since and so far in last 2 days, last time it did it was only once . So this could be the issue i will keep an eye on it.

I have ran DISM number of times only this one Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Also sfc /scannow number of time and it found no integrity violations or corrupt files.

I will try how you just showed me. Let you know how system is still doing. Thanks !!!

Trying Nir Soft ShellView feeling may be due to shell extension. One time error from a Nero Extension making explorer crash, so i disabled this one to see if the issue persists, take each one at a time as to know if any are causing me this problem. So far today no crashes yet, one only yesterday before disabling the extension.

Received another crash on april 19, also noticed one from an Epson Scanner Service for my All-in-One printer, could not be started on boot.
Could be due to fact the printer was off, but it usually is when PC is off, as i do not turn it on unless i am using it. This error never showed before in Event Viewer, so believing has nothing to do with printer not being on. The explorer crash was the same Devrtl.dll (faulting path module).

Went to the Epson scanner settings app and opened it, then explorer crashed after clicking test button on it. now usually you can not test scanner service with printer off. Now i do not open this software app regularly to have realized this. Believe has something to do with network connections only.

As what is done with a clean boot of disabling all non-microsoft software from running to determine the problem of the crash, i felt i will set this to manual see what happens, then take each other services i have till i can find if any of them are causing this crash, rather then all at once how it is regularly done.

This was one of the first solutions of this type of crash suggested by Microsoft techs online, other can also be shell extension conflicts.
As saying before that awhile back i had reinstalled windows 8.1 over another issue and it did it then, my thoughts on this was i had the same exact software and hardware i do now, no changes. So whatever is causing it can still be causing it again.

I seem to be working at this alone now, but that is o.k., as i am learning in the process and also hope this post may help others with this issue as i have seen it to be a common problem.

Using Autoruns which seems to identify more then Nir Soft shellview would. Find that shell extensions that were suppose to be disabled showed not in autoruns. Work with this program.
