BSOD with CACHE_MANAGER error code, can't boot/reinstall

Hi,

I have a 6-months old, Windows 8.1 Dell Inspiron Laptop with a traditional HDD drive and 32GB SSD drive. I have never understood how they both work together, Dell says that the 32GB SSD is used for storing the computer cache so that the 5200RPM drive is used to store the less frequently used files. I don't know if this might have something to do with my problem.

I spent two days without using my laptop. Usually the battery lasts about a week with the lid closed, but for some reason this time the battery was completely discharged when I tried to turn on the laptop. I plugged the charger in, waited some seconds, then pressed the power button. The Dell logo appeared and immediately after that a BSOD which disappeared so fast that I could not read the error.

After that, the laptop was restarting in a loop of BSOD's. I finally recorded the BSOD with a slow-mo camera and could read the error code: CACHE_MANAGER

The first thing I attempted to do was to reinstall Windows. The laptop doesn't have DVD drive, but fortunately I have an official Dell Windows 8.1 USB drive. I plugged the USB, pressed F12 right after pressing the power button and navigated through the Boot Options menu until I found the "USB drive" option. The system appeared to boot using the USB drive, with the message "Loading files..." and a black progress bar, which I have seen before when I have tried to reinstall Windows in other computers.

When the "Loading files..." progress bar finished loading, the laptop re-booted and started again with the BSOD Loop. If I press F12 again after it reboots, it starts the "Loading files..." process, reboots and enters in the BSOD loop.

I have performed the Dell Hardware check from the BIOS options. The computer passed correctly all the tests, including the hard drive and RAM memory tests.

I have also tried to burn a Linux USB drive and boot up from there, but the system can't seem to recognise that it's bootable ("No operating system found" error). However, it's not the first time I have problems reading a bootable USB from UEFI, so this shouldn't be related to the main problem I'm having. The Windows USB drive, however, is bootable and the system boots on it correctly because the "Loading files..." screen always appears in the pre-install process of Windows 8.1 from a USB stick.

Thanks

The CACHE_MANAGER error occurs when, as the name implies, a problem occurs in your file system’s cache manager. File systems are, basically, how data is organized on your hard drive. If you’re using an older system, it’ll be using FAT32, but if you’re using a newer version of Windows, you’ll have NTFS. Cache is saved data that your computer thinks is going to be used again — so the next time it’s used, it loads faster.
This problem, however, can also stem from your RAM, or memory.
There’s actually two kinds of memory — volatile and nonvolatile. Volatile memory is RAM — which is used for, say, having multiple tabs open at once. Nonvolatile memory is on your hard drive — the cache — and is used for things that may or may not be reused later.

I have created an Ubuntu bootable USB, and I have booted from the USB. The Ubuntu installation screen appears correctly, and I can follow the various installation steps. I guess this means that the RAM memory is fine.

However, when I reach the point in the setup where it asks me to choose which partition I want to choose to install Ubuntu, the partition table appears empty, as if there wasn't a single partition. When I click the "+" button to create a partition, I get the message "Ubuntu has detected an internal error" and then the installer exits.

It looks like my hard drive is dead, what do you think?

It's possible. If you know how to do it it wouldn't be a bad idea to test the HDD on another computer. Is the HDD detected in the BIOS?

@lmd1901 Please start your own thread and include the necessary files. If the notebook boots into Safe Mode, try performing a clean boot and see if it crashes there.
