Solved BSOD playing a game, display driver constantly crashing

I was playing Dota 2 on my laptop when I saw several small pixelated artifacts moving on the screen. I decided to alt-tab to see if my eyes were playing tricks on me, and the screen went black and I couldn't do anything. The screen was slowly flashing for awhile until there was a popup saying "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered."

It continued to flash until I got a BSOD saying DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (igdkmd64.sys). I rebooted the computer only to have it do the same thing on the start screen with the artifacts still there until I got a BSOD again.

I'm now typing this in safe mode since I can't start up normally because of the constant crashing. Can anyone help me?

OS: Windows 8.1 64 bit

CPU: Intel Core i7-4700MQ

Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M
Intel HD Graphics 4600

RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600MHZ

Hi jadz45122 & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

I have analysed your dump files and below has been provided an analysis of the same for informative purposes :-

VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116)
Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.
Arguments:
Arg1: ffffe000c3c42010, Optional pointer to internal TDR recovery context (TDR_RECOVERY_CONTEXT).
Arg2: fffff8005b490d90, The pointer into responsible device driver module (e.g. owner tag).
Arg3: 0000000000000000, Optional error code (NTSTATUS) of the last failed operation.
Arg4: 000000000000000d, Optional internal context dependent data.

So, according to the dump file, the 3rd argument is 0 which means the operation completed successfully yet the system crashed. Sounds strange right?
According to your description, if you are getting artifacts, that would be most likely a hardware problem.
Could you please perform the Furmark and check the temperatures?
FurMark Video Stress Test - free from here: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test (Looks like it's "BURN-IN test" now)
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
NOTE: Set the alarm to go off at 90ºC. Then watch the system from that point on. If the system doesn't display a temperature, watch it constantly and turn it off at the first sign of video problems. DO NOT leave it it unmonitored, it can DAMAGE your video card!!!
If the temperature gets above 100ºC, quit the test - the video card is overheating.
- Click "Quit" to exit
What you are looking for:
- excessive heat from the GPU (report back with anything over 90ºC)
- problems with the video display (picture is distorted or jumbled, picture turns black, etc)
- problems reported by the program (I haven't seen this, but "just in case")[/quote]

Please report the temperatures or any problems. Let me know how it goes ^_^.

Hi blueelvis, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately I can't run Furmark since I can't be on windows normally because it crashes right as the computer goes to the login screen. Is there a way to run it in safe mode?

I have also tried a fresh windows install and it worked fine until the Intel Graphics driver auto-installed itself and the same thing happened again.

If its a hardware issue, would it be due to the GPU? I will probably send it in for repairs/warrant claim.

Thanks!

Hi jadz45122 ^_^,

Could you please uninstall the Intel Graphics driver from Safe Mode and then try logging into Windows normally? Do this while you have disconnected from the Internet so that the Intel Graphics driver does not update itself automatically.

It is possible that your system is also overheating so I would make sure that it is not the case before sending it in for repair :)

Let me know how it goes ^-^

Hey blueelvis,

I tried what you told me, and I could log in normally with no problems. I opened Furmark and it said something about "requiring an OpenGL 2.0 compliant graphics controller. I'm guessing this means I can't start it without the Intel driver?

Thanks for the help

Hi jadz45122 ^_^,

Are you able to log in after uninstalling the Intel Driver? Well, that seems progress.

Have you tried installing the Intel Graphics driver from Windows Update? Are you getting the artifacts only when the Intel Graphics driver is installed?

Yes, that error from FurMark seems like you cannot start the test before Intel Graphics driver is installed.

Did you get a driver CD along with your motherboard? If yes, then have you tried installing the Intel Graphics driver from that CD?

Let me know how it goes ^_^

Hey Pranav,

Sorry about the very late reply, I'm leaving this for anyone reading this with a similar problem. I actually went down to tech support to speak to them in person, and they said it was a problem with the cpu and replaced the chip since I still have my warranty and it's working fine now.

Thanks for all the help :)
