Hi there eightforums,

Yesterday I was transferring files from one internal drive to the other when the file transfer process froze, and then my computer froze. After 10 minutes I powered off the computer by holding down the power button. Since then windows cannot operate for more than 3 to 4 minutes. Same problem operating the computer on a clean boot. During this time disk usage in the task manager goes up to 100% and stays there. I can run the computer in safe mode without the problem manifesting. I have performed a system restore but that did not resolve the issue. I ran chkdsk on C: and D: successfully but the issue persisted. I also defragged C: drive (OS is on C with defraggler in safe mode. Tried to defrag D: next but got BSOD with error KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (spaceport.sys). Windows still freezes within minutes.

I've tried googling different versions of this problem but none of the suggestions (mostly to try and end tasks in task manager before windows freezes) have been successful. I'm at the end of what I can try and do via google-fu and I'm hoping someone here can help (please). SF Debug Tool files attached.

I suggest you to open the case and make sure all the cables (power & sata) connected to D: drive are tightly connected then try running chkdsk again.

Thanks for the quick response! I'm a little hesitant to open it up, it's an ASUS laptop (looks like I forgot to put that in the OP) and I've never opened a laptop before. When I'm in safe mode I can still access files from D: - I just watched a movie off of it this evening. Would that indicate that the connections are good? edit - didn't actually watch (safe mode = no sound) just let it play through to see if it would crash while I was watching TV :)

OK. I thought that you have a desktop PC. When you run chkdsk, Did you run with /r option ?

Yes, I ran it with the /f /r /x commands on both drives. I ran it from the command prompt option under the windows 8 restart recovery option in settings. Took a few tries but eventually I got it to run all the way through on both drives.

OK. So both of the drives are good but to make sure. Download: CrystalDiskInfo.V6.2.0 and double check if they are both in good health.

Looking at your BSOD dmp file. It indicates that you have a memory corruption, so the next step is to run memory diagnostic.
Download: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool, put in a USB stick and boot up to run the test. You need to run for at least 5 passes unless errors occur earlier.

FYI, when copying/moving files from one HDD to another HDD. RAM is used as a buffer and if the RAM is bad, it will also cause the problem.

Good luck.

Running into some trouble with these next two steps. I downloaded and unzipped crystaldisk, but could not find anything within the folder to install or run. I downloaded Memtest 86+ and put it onto a usb drive (reformatted as requested by memtest) but cannot seem to get the machine to boot via the usb. I went into the UEFI settings and changed the boot order to boot the usb first, and I turned off secure boot. When I save and exit I am booted back into Windows normally. Any thoughts on what I may be missing?

  1. Try another link for diskinfo: CrystalDiskInfo5_6_2Shizuku.zip . Just unzip and run.
  2. In addition to turn off secure boot. You might have to set to boot with MBR. Make sure you set the boot priority to boot from USB first or from the boot menu, select the USB containing Memory Diagnostic.
