BSOD under light activity in WIN 8.1 browsing / VLC player

Right now the only thing I can think of that would likely cause a BSOD, is my CPU (i2500k) being overclocked @ 4Ghz, but it has never once caused me an issue over the past year (It's rock solid under prime95). Currently it's running at 4Ghz, and I've never had a hitch under load or just normal activity.

Currently running Windows 8.1

Thanks if anyone can help me out!View attachment 55171

Do you still need help with this problem?
If so, reply back and I'll respond within 48 hours.

Please remove the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Also, FYI, overclocks can degrade over time - and sometimes it's only due to one component. While stability under Prime95 is encouraging, Prime95 doesn't test the entire CPU.

Are you causing crashes with the keyboard? Have you modified the registry to enable any crashes?
I noted a STOP 0xDEADDEAD crash in the WER section of MSINFO32.

Several possible causes (from a quick review of MSINFO32 report):
- Plex Media Server
- wireless USB network adapter
- possible USB audio device
- CoreTemp

Hmm, I don't follow here. I don't think I've enabled any crashes. Is that part of troubleshooting BSODs normally?

-No USB audio devices are being used, just an Asus Xonar card.
-CoreTemp: Does this cause crashes? I think I ran this after the crash, but not before. Interesting though.
-Plex server wasn't serving media at the time just running as a service. Last year though I had major issues with crashes when streaming large amounts of data over Ethernet / LAN. Once I installed a PCI NIC, no streaming / Internet / Ethernet related crashes.

Wireless USB adapter is interesting... I started using that a day before the crash, mostly to connect to my wireless switch to update some settings. I don't need to have it connected now.

It hasn't crashed since I made this post, so maybe it was just a one time thing. Thanks for your response!

No, but the presence of a STOP 0xDEADDEAD error isn't usually seen (I've only seen one in all the years that I've been doing this - and that was deliberately caused with the keyboard method). Don't worry about it - you'd have known if you'd done anything like this. It's a bit of mucking about in the registry, and then a complicated series of keystrokes to make it happen.

BSOD's are quirky things - sometimes they're simple, and other times they're really complicated.
Sometimes they're fixed by magic (actually it's more than likely that a background Windows process has done something to fix it), sometimes you can't fix them without weeks of work.
Finally, what causes a BSOD on one system may not cause it on another. I suspect that there is a combination of things that are actually responsible - so figuring out the exact cause is often very frustrating.

CoreTemp drivers have been associated w/BSOD crashes for a while now - but not often enough to outright state that it is a cause (the same thing goes for USB audio cards/headphones).

Plex server is even less likely, but there have been issues recently (within the last several months) that cause me to suspect it - but I haven't seen any of those signs in the last month or so.

Wireless USB adapters have been a problem since Vista came out. Removing the device may not fix these errors - and it may be necessary to remove it's software also. This is one of those problem areas that is:
- BSOD's are known to be associated with the wireless USB devices or drivers, and
- The BSOD's are also affected by other things on the system.

Good luck!

Very interesting. Well thanks for your help!

I'll post back here if I encounter yet another crash. In the meantime, I'll uninstall the wireless drivers, which aren't 3rd party... just the standard Win8 prepackaged drivers for common hardware.

When I first got started on BSOD stuff, there was a driver named ASACPI.sys that dated from 2005. It caused BSOD's on many systems - and we finally located it on (of all places) Windows Update!

Microsoft allows manufacturer's to upload drivers to Windows Update, but doesn't interfere with what/how they are posted.
They do have a program for this (WHQL) but most manufacturer's don't like it as it adds additional requirements (so that Microsoft can certify the drivers).

In most cases these drivers are OK to use - but once the BSOD's start appearing, I don't advise using them.
I start with drivers from the manufacturer of the chipset on the device.
If not there, then I check the device manufacturer's site.
If it's part of a pre-built computer, then I check at the computer manufacturer's site
And the last place that I'll check is Windows Update (this includes the Update Driver choice in Device Manager)

*************************************************
And, as I've been an idiot and forgot to run the full analysis - here it is:

Your UEFI/BIOS dates from 2012. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the UEFI/BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard. If possible, use the "inside Windows" flash mechanism (if your OEM provides one) - that is much more forgiving than the traditional (floppy drive) flash method.

Only 25 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 100 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available (and didn't experience any errors).

F: drive only has about 0.5 % free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

You have about 6 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

The latest memory dump that I can find is dated from 31 Oct 2014 - have you been having BSOD's since then?
If so, the system isn't capturing them. Let's have a look at this report:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here: Windows Kernel event ID 41 error "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first" in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

We use MacDrive at work - and it's been acting up there. Can you live without it temporarily? If so, please uninstall it and see if that helps.

The last dump may have been caused by WhoCrashed - have you used that program?

There are enough signs here that I have to wonder about this installation. Should this be a pirated copy of Windows, please be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.

    button
  2. Click on Command prompt =>
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command licensingdiag.exe -report "%userprofile%\Desktop\report.txt" -log "%userprofile%\Desktop\repfiles.cab"
  4. Once finished please go to your desktop -> You will see two files report.txt and repfiles.cab -> Please select both files and add them into a zip file
  5. Upload this zip file to your next reply

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :
