Hi,

I've been getting BSODs on this machine since new. Replaced HDD and done various factory resets over last year. Seems related to display adapters but not sure. BSODs are more frequent since using multiple monitor setup with port replicator.

Thanks!

Nick

Thanks for your help.

Prime95 passed. I removed NvStreamKms.sys yesterday and had a BSOD overnight. I removed wdcsam64.sys and uninstalled Intel Smart Connect (WPRO_41_2001.sys) today and had a BSOD this evening. New files are attached.

Thanks again,

Nick

Your CPU is failing, it needs replacing.

Each dump file contains an internal timer error located on the 4th cache bank in the CPU.
Code:
Error : Internal timer (Proc 7 [COLOR=#ff0000]Bank 4[/COLOR])
  Status : 0xbe00000000800400
  Address : 0xfffff801f16a2d12
  Misc. : 0xfffff801f16a2d12

Consistency is never good, indicating a hardware error.
On top of this, we have a 0x101 indicating a processor failed to synchronise with the IPI clock interrupt.

I would highly recommend getting your CPU replaced if it's under warranty; it's certainly failing.

My previous Prime95 test was brief so I ran it for 2 hours and it passed. (See attached). I'm still working on the Memtest.

Thanks, Mysers Briggs, for your input. HP won't usually replace things unless their own diagnostics show a fault. I'll run a lengthy HP component test as soon as I can.

Thanks,

Nick

I was unable to boot from a USB flash or CD drive no matter what I tried so I was unable to run Memtest. I ran an HP Diagnostics extensive system test (5 hours) and everything passed.

Thanks,

Nick

My machine will not boot from USB. I reordered boot devices in UEFI and Legacy Boot with Secure Boot on or off. I tried booting to USB from the Win8 Recovery menu. I tried with a flash drive and a USB CD drive with a disc burned from an ISO. HP recently sent me a USB flash drive to restore the PC to factory settings and tech support was unable to get the machine to boot from USB so I had to send it in. Will Memtest run any other way?

I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool yesterday, as well, and it passed. What did you think of Mysers Briggs note about the CPU above? I've run it for two hours so far, with two workers to control heat. Should I run Prime95 for longer?

This is a tough one. I've had this machine for a year and never gone longer than a few weeks without a BSOD. It has been HP repair twice, had the HDD replaced once, and I've factory restored it several times.

It seems the problem with manufacturer's is that they're reluctant to replace parts unless their diagnostics mention a fault. I don't find many hardware tests reliable, with the exception of HDD and RAM tests; as a result, I tend not to rely on those tests, but rather the evidence in the dump files. The choice is yours though, you can try more tests if you wish, I'm 99% certain it's your CPU.

Thanks MB! I'm going to run a longer stress test on the CPU and then call HP either way. The info from your earlier post is the evidence I need to argue the point.

I was on the phone with HP for 2 hours last night. I refused to reset to factory settings or send the computer in for software fixes and explained my long-standing problems. I was transferred to a supervisor, then to the AMS TCO Escalations Team or complaint dept. The representative remoted in, studied the Event Logs and found all critical errors were related to low power to the kernel. He ordered me a new a/c adapter. I'm not sure how this is supposed to affect BSODs that happen while on battery power but I'm willing to try it. I supposedly now have a single rep who will work with me until this is fixed. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again,

Nick

If the error happens when using the battery then it is no way related to the AC adapter...
I assume he's referring to these events.

Idle state type: ACPI Idle (C) States (2 state(s))

Performance state type: [COLOR=#800080]ACPI Performance (P)[/COLOR] / [COLOR=#ff0000]Throttle (T) States[/COLOR]
Nominal Frequency (MHz): [COLOR=#008000]2401[/COLOR]
Maximum performance percentage: 100
Minimum performance percentage: 33
Minimum throttle percentage: 3

I've looked further into this, although I cannot find the exact reason for it. Have you modified some options within the BIOS, such as SpeedStep?
Due to the fact that I do not have a Kernel memory dump for one of your 0x124 crashes, I cannot find the temperatures for your computer. Do you crash when performing a particular activity? Can you monitor your temperatures with Speccy or HWmonitor.

T states are old throttle states which are largely undocumented as they are uncommon, they're also no longer used with modern processors, so these can be completely ignored.

P states are used by SpeedStep for Intel processors that consists of many power states, these lower the speeds and performance of a processor to generate less heat and use less power. This will change depending upon heat and power comsumption; although I don't see anything in your event log that shows the processor is being throttled at all.
There's a lot of information on this, including a calculation that explains how power consumption is indentified, as well as how SpeedStep uses this calculation to alter the processor accordingly.

You might want to try to reset the BIOS in case you have made any alterations, it might correct this problem. I still cannot see the AC adapter causing the problem, I have no idea where they're getting this information from.

Your laptop was in a low power sleep state for nearly half an hour, was this due to a timer with Windows or unknown? It could be temperature related.
Are these two events related to manual work which you have done purposely or are they automatic and therefore a problem; if the latter then we seem to be looking at a CPU problem, most likely temperature related.

 Comment:

The reason code indicates the SHTDN_REASON_FLAG_PLANNED flag was enabled for whatever reason. This event should create a System State Data file, although it's not generated unless Windows Error Reporting is enabled.
Double check that the WERS is ENABLED:

Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.

Slightly off topic.

I had a failing ASUS motherboard on my computer, in fact I still have it in this computer, I called ASUS and they said it was my RAM or HDD, I know for certain it isn't, but they refuse to do anything because they see BSODs being caused by RAM or failing drives... Meaning I'll have to buy a new motherboard at some point, one thing is for sure though; I'm not going with ASUS again.

Strangely enough, I haven't had a BSOD since the new A/C adapter arrived, that after two BSODs on 12/15 and two complete freezes that recorded no data on 12/16. I haven't put a meter on the adapters to see if they differ at all.

I had made no changes to the BIOS, beyond changing boot order trying to get Memtest to run. Temperature has not been an issue. I sometimes find the machine running scheduled Host Services processes when idle with the fan blowing but it sits on a cooling stand at home. In normal use, it rarely breaks 60 degrees C or 70 in heavy usage. I have started the Windows Error Reporting Service for good measure.

Thanks!

Nick
