While attempting a system restore (back to a week ago) on 8.1 I've encountered a Critical Process Died
When I try to access System Restore in 'Advanced Options' or 'Refresh your PC' I need to enter my password... but receive a message "The password is incorrect. Try again."
The password I'm using IS correct.
Tried the obvious (caps lock, keyboard layout) and no go.
I'd really appreciate any advice on where to go from here...
Extra info:
- 8.1was installed via update... no disc.
- 'Restore' takes me to the logo screen (stuck there)
- 'Restart' in 'Advanced Options' loops back to the "Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC", with a choice of Shut Down or Advanced Options. Log file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt
- Computer is an Acer Aspire V5-571P
Pretty sure that it has one, but haven't checked inside the case!

Internet Speed
too slow when I'm waiting for a download to finish
After 30 mins on the phone with Microsoft, they determined that the part of Windows that deals with processing the password was likely to have been damaged.
Acer Recovery disk wouldn't allow a refresh - "Drive where windows is installed is locked".
Had to admit defeat and took it to the repair shop. An arm and a leg later, it's back in business with a new hard drive (old one was registering errors when tested).
In this case, the computer may experience startup failures if you try to roll back the system to a restore point that was created before you installed update rollup 3000850.
Sorry to hear that, but I'm glad that your system is back up and running.
Replacing the drive was probably the best thing to do -as it let you start out fresh again.
Thanks for letting us know!
