Hi there,

Upgraded an old pc rig this summer, it has had BSODS ever since.
They seem to come at any time. While on desktop, in games, watching a movie, or just browsing. Some times it seems to happen multiple times a day, other times I can use it for a week without anything.

Its worth mentioning that a lot of games/programs often seem to crash as well, as well as the browser (chrome) at times. These things did not use to crash before..

Quite often, there simply is not a log created for my crashes. And at times, my pc crashes does not result in a bluescreen at all, it just looks like a quick restart and no BSOD has been added..

See the attached screenshot for a quick overview of errors and bugstrings.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    windows 8.1
The BlueScreenView show 9 different crashes (with a total of 21 BSOD's being reported):
The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case. Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

Please get a head start on the hardware diagnostics - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics
Also, monitor your system's temperatures with this free tool: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
Normally desktop temps shouldn't exceed:
CPU - 60ºC
GPU - 80ºC
HDD and other components - 40ºC

Your UEFI/BIOS dates from 2012. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the UEFI/BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard. If possible, use the "inside Windows" flash mechanism (if your OEM provides one) - that is much more forgiving than the traditional (floppy drive) flash method.

Older Crucial M4 drives has some firmware problems that would cause BSOD's. Please be sure that you have the latest firmware for your Crucial drive.

Asus Bluetooth is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

Lot's of Windows Updates failures in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report. If the problems continue, please post over in the Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 8 Forums for further expert assistance with this issue.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disk-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized. i5 and i7 processors can be "auto-overclocked" by using Intel's TurboBoost feature. If so, it's safe to disregard this caution.
Processor may be overclocked!
Expected Frequency: 3400
Actual Frequency: 3503
Overclock Ratio: 1.03029

In the following reports, the drivers that end in Gw64.sys are related to Sambreel/Yontoo progams (adware). This is an indicator that the system may be infected. Please post over in the Security Forums for expert assistance in cleaning your system. Here's a link to it: System Security - Windows 8 Forums

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

LGBusEnum.sys Mon Nov 23 20:36:48 2009 (4B0B38B0)
Logitech Keyboard
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=LGBusEnum.sys

LGVirHid.sys Mon Nov 23 20:36:48 2009 (4B0B38B0)
Logitech Gamepanel Virtual HID Device Driver
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=LGVirHid.sys

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are [DEL]struckout[/DEL] don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

Thank you very much for your reply, here is some info from me:

- Ive cleaned out my pc - its dust free (and there was little there to begin with as I have dustfilters).
- I already have all windows updates installed.
- I made sure my M4 was updated, it already had the latest drivers.
- Asus bluetooth is disabled because I dont want devices to find my pc via bluetooth, is this a problem?
- Daemontools has been removed and spdt.sys as well.
- I am not overclocking, so that is likely to be the turbo boost.

Im hoping to avoid doing a bios update, so I will wait for a new crash before I continue.
If I get a crash, I will update the bios from here : Motherboards - P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 - ASUS . However, I am hesitant to use it as the filesize is less than 1/3 of the previous version (the one I am using - how could this be??)

Bluetooth being disabled is not a problem as long as it's kept updated.
I ask the question that way in case you say something like "Well, the bluetooth was acting up on me - so I turned it off"

To update it, re-enable it and then check for updates.
Once it's updated, then disable it again.

Most likely you're not overclocking (you could have set up "Turbo" features in the BIOS), and the overclock isn't that high either.
You have an i7 so it's most likely the TurboBoost feature.

BIOS updates are tricky. I'd suggest posting over at the Asus forums to find others who have already gone through this problem.
The size of the BIOS concerns me also - but it talks about issues with Intel RST, so I have to wonder if it's a complicated routine that flashes more than just the usual stuff in the BIOS.

I'd hold off on the BIOS update until all other suggestions have been addressed.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help so far, I have an update today.

Upon starting my computer, I was greeted with a blue screen that I have never seen before:

-----------------
RECOVERY
Your pc needs to be repiared
A required device isnt connected or cant be accessed.

Error code : 0x000000e

Youll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you dont have any installation media contact your system administrator or PC manufactor.

Press ENTER to try again
Press F8 for Start-up settings
-------------------

I pressed enter a few times, it flashed and gave me the same screen (split second flash)
Pressed F8 a few times, same thing.

Restarted my computer, it booted fine, and here I am.. Maybe that could give any clues? No .dmp files were created.

The error code is most likely this: 0xc000000e
If that's the case, this refers to the BCD not being able to find the device that it's looking for (STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE)
This could be a hardware problem, or it could be software related (caused by corruption in the BCD or the file system on the hard drive).

The first step in problems of this sort is to run the Startup Repair tools.
Then run hardware diagnostics (in particular, run the hard drive diagnostics listed in this link: Hardware Diagnostics )
Also run chkdsk /r /f from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt
Then try to repair the BCD (again from the Startup Repair tools - Command Prompt)

Let us know the results of the steps (particularly the hard drive diagnostics and chkdsk).
Also, if the BSOD's recur, please zip up and upload the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump with your next post. You may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up.

Adding some more minidumps and results.

These minidumps came while running ESET - crashed twice. Eset removed some Java stuff, (2 files).

Did some disk checks, uploading screenshots from crystaldiskinfo and Westen Digitals own tool.
I couldnt find any tools for running a test on my SSD like it did on the HDD , but I think this will do?
Im really not sure what Im suppose to do/look at with crystaldisk. I opened the program, hit scan, hit refresh and the result didnt seem to change.

GPU temp in the screenshot is 80ºC, but if I'm reading the graph correctly it seems as if that's the highest that the temp gets.
The leveling off on the graph shows that the cooler is working properly.

A couple of the drivers in the memory dump are indicative of an infection (the one's that end in Gw64.sys). I'd suggest running some of these free virus scans (in case your current protection software has been compromised): Free Online AntiMalware Resources (the links haven't been verified compatible with Win8/8.1 - so you may have to try several in order to find a few that work for you.)

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are [DEL]struckout[/DEL] don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

Don't forget to finish all of the hardware diagnostics (as this appears to be a low-level or hardware problem).
Let us know the results and we'll move on from there.
