Random BSOD on new Windows 8.1 - Mainly with ntoskrnl.exe

Been getting a lot of BSOD messages recently on my very new Windows 8.1 machine (both hardware and software), a lot of them are not creating dumps. Mainly related to ntoskrnl.exe but a number of crashes related to possible driver issues.

Have run/tried the following:

  • Malwarebytes - Not a single infection or issue.
  • SFC - Scan is completely clean. Ran it probably at least 10 times.
  • Memtest - Ran a full 12 hour scan. No errors.
  • I've removed RAM, and tried difference slots, running on a single DIMM and multiple DIMMS in different slots
  • Removed all external hardware. Only internal disks and Unifying USB for Keyboard/Mouse.
  • Have run Driver Verifier, and this was consistently restarting my system, so it was showing something was wrong.
  • Updated all my drivers
  • Windows Updates are current (and always are)
  • Running latest BIOS

Today it happened when I was running Team Viewer. I don't know if that is what caused the issue, but generally I'm not running it when it happens. As you can see by the timing, it can happen overnight when I'm not doing anything at all. It's all very odd and driving me really mad, especially when I use this machine for a lot of work related activities.

Any help would be much appreciated.

That was my fear. Are there specific tests that I should focus on here based on what you see? I've run the memtest already and this was clean.

My worry was the SSD which holds the OS (and I did update the firmware on it recently because it had apparent issues with Windows 8.1), but I also run quite a few linked clone VM's off of it as well. One of my internal drives (2TB) has a bunch of sector errors when I run CrystalDisk. It doesn't have anything on it, but it's connected and running.

Please do the tests on the link above and try running your system with HDD detached and see if the system BSODs on you. They might point us in the right direction.

So have run a bunch of tests today, and during testing/stress have not been able to replicate the BSOD. This is with all existing hardware connected.

Prime95 - Ran for 2 hours without any problems. Saw CPU temp sitting at 95C, which seemed pretty high but it was running fine (but this is one of the reasons I didn't run it for a lot longer!). Am using the stock cooler that came with the CPU. Nothing I do is massively CPU intensive, mainly Disk I/O and Memory intensive work. I haven't really played many games since building this machine, but ones I have seem to have worked fine. I'm wondering if this may be an issue, but under continuous stress,

memtest - Ran an overnight test previous to this thread. No errors or issues.

seatools (4 Internal Drives, 3 x Spinning, 1 x SSD)

- SMART - Pass x 4 (although according to CrystalDiskInfo, the 3TB drive has Reallocated Sector Count, Current Pending Sector Count, and Uncorrectable Sector Count warnings)
- Short DST - Pass x 4
- Short Generic - Pass x 4
- Long Generic - Not tested yet.

FurMark - Ran a stress test for 30 minutes. Temp of GPU was 80C, and no glitches or crashes.

I had read that certain versions of Prime95 hammer Haswell CPU's, but even under stress and high temp it doesn't seem to have forced a crash. :/

That is fairly high temp. Have you cleaned your computer of dust lately? Try working without that one HDD with Reallocated sector count (bad sectors) and see if it makes a difference. I would highly recommend that you backup any data you might have on it ASAP before it fails.

The machine is brand new. Pretty much brand new everything, which is what is most annoying about this. I'm going to try and remove the CPU/Fan, and redo the thermal paste, and re-seat everything. But I'm not sure that is the problem, as even at that high temp, it didn't crash as I would have expected it to.

Luckily for me, the 3TB drive has nothing on it. I will remove it from the config, and see how it goes. Might be a few days before I get any new data.

Then leave the CPU untouched for now. Just try with the HDD unplugged and please if you experience any more BSODs, include the minidump file. Thanks.

4 more quick succession BSOD's. All different. Minidumps attached. The first 2 times I wasn't even using the PC. It was locked, with the 2nd one rebooting without me even logging in!! :/

I've cleaned up some of the drivers I think, but I don't know for sure. Where are you the date information from because the files I attached don't seem to have that information in them.

The more I look at it, the more I think CPU cooling could be the problem. With so many random errors, I'm wondering whether the stock CPU fan is even good enough. Currently just after I re-applied thermal paste and re-seated the CPU and Fan, the temp is already 50C and I'm not doing anything apart from typing this message.

Speccy is telling me that the motherboard is running at 28C, and the CPU at 50C at 1-3% usage!

So, I think unless there is something telling in the Minidumps, I'm going to order a new CPU cooler, and see what happens.

The last zip file you uploaded was empty. Please reupload the dumps. What CPU do you have? Did you remove all of the drivers I mentioned?

Sorry, here are the dumps again.

I did some cleanup, but I had a question above about drivers. See above ^

I'm running an i7 4790K with no OC

The CPU is fine. If you have the money, you could invest in a AM cooler, but the system has to work with the stock one too.
Your GPU driver is the issue here.

Arg4: 400000000000004a, Reserved
The reference count of an object is illegal for the current state of the object.
Each time a driver uses a pointer to an object the driver calls a kernel routine
to increment the reference count of the object. When the driver is done with the
pointer the driver calls another kernel routine to decrement the reference count.
Drivers must match calls to the increment and decrement routines. This bugcheck
can occur because an object's reference count goes to zero while there are still
open handles to the object, in which case the fourth parameter indicates the number
of opened handles. It may also occur when the object?s reference count drops below zero
whether or not there are open handles to the object, and in that case the fourth parameter
contains the actual value of the pointer references count.

Thanks for your help so far. I will be investing in a better cooler. In the meantime I've ramped the fan speed up to MAX in the BIOS/UEFI.

I use GeForce experience and keep things pretty much up to date. There is a new driver today, so I'm just updating it now. I'll look at that post you've sent and report back.

I have the regular Windows Firewall, and Windows Defender, but I don't user anti-virus or network monitoring. I did have PingPlotter installed for a recent router issue, but I uninstalled it a few days ago. I'm pretty good at keeping my system free of one-time-use software.

I basically went through and deleted any unused software (which wasn't much since I keep my system pretty clean). I removed some older drivers, and update the Nvidia Drivers to the latest version (there were new ones out that day coincidentally), after removing them first.

So far, there have been no BSOD in 4 days, but I'm not getting overly excited right now. Today I upgraded CPU fan to a Cooler Master Hyper Evo 212 with 2 fans! A little overkill perhaps, but figured it wouldn't do me any harm.

I've also gathered the system data again. Could you take a look at the drivers again, and see if I missed anything?

Well, like I said it's only be 4 days. I've gone longer without a BSOD. I was just interested to know about the drivers, and if the cleanup got rid of those older drivers.

Aaaaaaand, 5 minutes after posting this - BSOD. :(

So, I think I'm going to rebuild from scratch. Should only take me an afternoon to do it. I'll tackle it tomorrow.
