Page Fault in Nonpaged Area BSOD on Wake

Hi guys!

I've recently started getting the same BSOD every time I wake my computer from sleep/hibernation (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA). From the crash dump, it looks like it's caused by tcpip.sys and some driver issue, but I can't seem to pinpoint what exactly is going wrong. I've tried updating the network adapter driver but that didn't fix it.

I have an Acer M5-581T Ultrabook running Windows 8.1.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible that your AV is trying to access the network and hence the BSOD. What security product do you use?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm currently using Norton 360. Should I try disabling it to see if that does anything? I thought the issue was more related to outdated/missing drivers but I could be wrong.

A lot of drivers are outdated. Please update them if possible. Update your wifi, I think that's what causing the crashes

Are the outdated drivers just the ones in red, or all of them in the list?
Also, by updating the wifi, do you mean the network adapter?

Turns out those first five red drivers (NTI through EgisTec) were part of some bloatware programs that I never bothered removing. I just uninstalled those programs, so those drivers shouldn't be an issue.

The PdaNet USB Wireless Tether one was part of a 3rd party tethering software that I no longer use, so I uninstalled that one too.

However, I'm still experiencing the BSOD even though my Atheros network adapter driver is up to date (10.0.0.298). Could it be something that's not showing up in that driver list that's causing the problem?

Here's another crash log: View attachment 54582

Please zip up and upload the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump folder
You may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up.

The last 3 memory dumps continue to be STOP 0x50's and they all blame tcpip.sys - so we can presume that this is a problem with a driver trying to access the network.

These 2 drivers remain in your last uploaded memory dump:

Have you uninstalled the Acer Empowering Technology programs?

Your bluetooth drivers date from before the release of Win8.1 Some systems have BSOD problems with Win8 bluetooth drivers on Win8.1 systems. Please update your Bluetooth drivers to one's that are compatible w/Win8.1

Driver Verifier often works well with coaxing faulting driver names out of memory dumps. Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Beyond this I have these 3 suggestions:
1. Get ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all
2. Get ALL available, Win8.1 compatible updates from the manufacturer's website.
3. Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Good luck!

Regarding the bluetooth drivers, both of the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator Drivers up up to date according to this: Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator Drivers Download for Windows 7, 8, XP, Vista
The Bluetooth USB Module appears to be up to date as well (10/15/14).
I'll try updating the Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth Bus driver and get back to you on those results.

The last 2 memory dumps are both Driver Verifier enabled.
Unfortunately, they both point to Windows drivers (tcpip.sys)
In short this means that Windows couldn't find a 3rd party cause for these crashes

In most cases this is usually a hardware problem
But it can also be a Windows problem.
Another possibility is that a 3rd party driver is compromising a Windows component (such as tcpip.sys) and is exiting before the crash occurs.

Have you uninstalled the Acer Empowering Technology stuff? The drivers are still present (and are outdated) in the memory dumps.

What to do? I'm not quite sure at this point.
Working through all of the 3rd party drivers in the memory dump would be my suggestion
But it'll involve uninstalling a lot of programs in order to see if they're causing issues.
And, if it's not due to them - then that's an awful lot of work (and time) wasted.

I found these Bluetooth devices in the MSINFO32 report:

Name Bluetooth Audio Device
Manufacturer Qualcomm Atheros Communications
Status OK
PNP Device ID BTHENUM\{61118058-486C-4BB0-B4B8-ACE4DCADEC44}_LOCALMFG&0000\8&BF9335C&0&000000000000_00000000
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\btath_a2dp.sys (8.0.1.304, 330.20 KB (338,120 bytes), 9/7/2013 1:29 AM)

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I've uninstalled those NTI programs, so I'm not sure why the drivers are sticking around.

I ordered a new Intel Centrino wifi card to replace my current Atheros one because I've been having a lot of wifi issues with my laptop as well, so I'll see if replacing that fixes the issue. Hopefully it'll work so I won't have to go through all my drivers/programs.

Here's how to get rid of those drivers:
BUT, there's 2 huge cautions here:
1) DO NOT get overly aggressive when removing entries associated with NTI/NewTechInfosystems/Empowering Technology - too much may result in problems with the system. When in doubt, leave them alone!
2) Do one at a time and test thoroughly before trying the second one - otherwise you may not be able to tell which one was causing the problems.

Good luck!

NTIDrvr.sys:
1) Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2) Create a Repair disc (Recovery Drive in Win8.1):
Win 8 - Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog...type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
Win 8.1 - Go to the Start Screen and type in "recoverydrive" (one word, without the quotes). That will start the recovery drive process. You will need a USB drive of at least 512 mB - and all data will be erased off of it. If copying the recovery partition the drive size will be much, much larger (16 - 32 gB drive required).
3) Test the System Repair disc/Recovery Drive to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk/drive (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)
4) Download this free program (Autoruns for Windows) and use it to disable any instances of NTIDrvr.sys that are starting (or any other NTI/NewTechInfosystems/Empowering Technology entries) (DO NOT DELETE - only disable by removing the checkmark in the left hand column)
5) Check in Device Manager (to include showing hidden devices from the View menu item) and ensure that any instances of NTIDrvr.sys (or any other NTI/NewTechInfosystems/Empowering Technology entries) are "Uninstalled" (DO NOT DISABLE THESE).
6) Check in the Services applet (services.msc) to be sure any instances of NTIDrvr.sys or any other NTI/NewTechInfosystems/Empowering Technology entries are disabled.
7) EXPERIMENTAL STEP (only try if you're certain of your abilities - I have not tried this step myself). Search the registry (use regedit.exe) to locate any entries that have the driver name (NTIDrvr.sys) or the program name (NTI/NewTechInfosystems/Empowering Technology). Delete these keys (it's advisable to back them up first - but you've also backed up the entire registry when creating a System Restore point in step 1. Alternatively, you can set the values in these keys to DISABLED (but the "how" of this is beyond the scope of this).
8) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename the NTIDrvr.sys driver to NTIDrvr.BAD (search the hard drive for it if it's not in C:\Windows\System32\drivers).

In the event that the system doesn't boot:

1) Boot from the System Repair disc/Recovery Drive and use the Command Prompt option to rename NTIDrvr.BAD to NTIDrvr.sys
Code:
ren C:\Windows\System32\drivers\NTIDrvr.BAD C:\Windows\System32\drivers\NTIDrvr.sys
2) Boot from the System Repair disc/Recovery Drive and use the System Restore option to restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

Good luck!

UBHelper.sys:
1) Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2) Create a Repair disc (Recovery Drive in Win8.1):
Win 8 - Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog...type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
Win 8.1 - Go to the Start Screen and type in "recoverydrive" (one word, without the quotes). That will start the recovery drive process. 4) Download this free program (Autoruns for Windows) and use it to disable any instances of UBHelper.sys.sys that are starting (or any other NTI/NewTechInfosystems/Empowering Technology entries) (DO NOT DELETE - only disable by removing the checkmark in the left hand column)
5) Check in Device Manager (to include showing hidden devices from the View menu item) and ensure that any instances of UBHelper.sys.sys (or any other NTI/NewTechInfosystems/Empowering Technology entries) are "Uninstalled" (DO NOT DISABLE THESE).

1) Boot from the System Repair disc/Recovery Drive and use the Command Prompt option to rename UBHelper.BAD to UBHelper.sys

After installing the new wifi card and deleting those two drivers, the BSOD went away for a few hours but now is happening again. Here are the new crash logs:

Should I try just re-installing Windows to get a fresh start?

Reinstalling Windows "clean" is a valid troubleshooting tool. Here's some instructions on how to get it done: http://www.carrona.org/canned.html#clean You'll see that the instructions are for 7/Vista - but they're similar for Win8/8.1
The biggest differences are:
- recovery disks/drives can be made (and should be tested)
- Windows 8/8.1 offers REFRESH and RESET functions - so you can try them BEFORE you try the full wipe and reinstall of Windows from recovery media

BUT, let's try a couple of other things before going in that direction:
- uninstall Norton and see if that helps (ensure that Windows Defender and the Windows firewall are enabled in order to have protection while testing).
- uninstall Diskkeeper. As it's an older version, it may not fully support the newer modifications to the file system in Win8.1
- uninstall the UX theme software.

I did a more in-depth review of the raw stack text and there are some faint traces of the Diskkeeper drivers in the dumps - along with some hints that this might be a compatibility issue (hal.dll was present). I'd start with removing Diskkeeper - it's the most likely suspect at this point.

Good job removing those 2 drivers - they aren't in the last few memory dumps!
